From TEA

1. Title IV, Part A Use of Funds (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1v7QYQld9j5d-ubzyzFnA0cd5cnsDjrqF/view?usp=sharing)

2. Title IV, Part A Program Guide (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1upV__azbjVWVWhMqQLInWnxJnY3eWaFE/view?usp=sharing)

3. TEA has released a TAA about the Safe and Supportive Schools Program (SSSP) and the Annual School Safety Allotment Expenditures Reporting (https://tea.texas.gov/about-tea/news-and-multimedia/correspondence/taa-letters/safe-and-supportive-schools-program-sssp-and-the-annual-school-safety-allotment-expenditures-reporting)

and the specific questions that will be asked in the November 2021 Threat Assessment data submission (https://tea.texas.gov/sites/default/files/sssp-data-collection-survey.pdf)

4. The Human Trafficking Prevention and Awareness 2021-2022 Webinar Series will resume this year, so please review the flyer for dates and registration links.

5. Here is a link to the Health TEKS that will be adopted for the 22-23 school year- https://tea.texas.gov/sites/default/files/HealthTEKS-Ch115_adopted-11-2020.pdf

Some things to note-

  • The health TEKSs have not changed in 20 years, so many districts have not reviewed them in some time.
  • Many concepts on mental health, suicide prevention, substance use, healthy relationships, other mental health, safety, and substance use prevention subjects are now presented in middle school, where health is required.
  • Recent legislation (HB 1525 and SB 9 second session) require districts to do several steps when adopting curriculum for human sexuality, abuse, family violence, dating violence, and human trafficking.

It might be good to review this document for subjects covered by Title IV, Part A, such as bullying, human trafficking, substance use prevention, suicide prevention... to know what the state requires to avoid supplant issues. Title IV Part A funds cannot be used for state-required mandates.

6. There is new guidance out about the requirement for Child Abuse Reporting posters that are REQUIRED in all schools. Lick the link to see the full TAA about it: https://tea.texas.gov/about-tea/news-and-multimedia/correspondence/taa-letters/child-abuse-and-neglect-including-human-trafficking-prevention-and-awareness-reminders-and-requirements

3. From TASB - Fire Safety Basics for Schools

Fire departments across the country responded to an estimated 13,000 school fires between 2014 and 2018, according to the National Fire Protection Agency.

Large-scale fires can disrupt learning, destroy property, and most importantly, claim lives.

Local fire codes protect staff, students, and facilities by addressing factors such as building design, materials, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and sprinkler systems. Collaborate with fire officials in your area to ensure compliance.

From the TxSSC...

1. Don't forget to register for our Region 12 specific TxSSC trainings!
  • Advanced School Behavioral Threat Assessment Training – December 14, 2021
    https://txssc.txstate.edu/events/adv-sbta-trainings/
  • Advanced Digital Threat Assessment Training – December 15, 2021

  • SBLE TCOLE 4064 - March 2-3, 2022

2. The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) is partnering with Sandy Hook Promise to bring Start with Hello, one of Sandy Hook Promise’s no-cost Know the Signs programs which teaches students to be more socially inclusive and connected to each other. With activities and curricula available for all ages, students are empowered to end social isolation in three easy steps which include: see someone alone, reach out and help, and start with hello. The training is 2.5 hours and will consist of a wide range of activities and resources to ensure training integration within the school culture, supported by student-led SAVE Promise Clubs.

Individuals can find more information and register by visiting: https://txssc.txstate.edu/events/start-with-hello-trainings/

3. Safety and Security Processes: Take this opportunity to visit your safety and security processes and have collaborative conversations with local law enforcement and emergency management agencies in your efforts to continually identify and improve safety and security challenges.

4. Access Control: Review your access control measures with all staff. Only admit people to your building once you know who they are, and ensure they have a legitimate reason to be in your building.

5. Anonymous Reporting Systems: Research shows that those who wish to do harm to others often tell someone about their plans and that there was identifiable cause for concern prior to the attack. Remind parents and students of any anonymous reporting systems or other means to report issues of concern.

6. Communication: Be prepared to address your parents and the community. After the Sandy Hook tragedy, many schools took proactive measures with a message or letter home to parents.

7. The Contagion Effect: You should be aware that often schools experience an increase in incidents during the coming weeks following such a tragic event with regards to hit lists, threats, and rumors.

8. School Behavioral Threat Assessment: School Behavioral Threat Assessment is considered a best practice for preventing targeted school violence and is a requirement.

9. Local First Responders: Meet with local first responders and request increased law enforcement visibility at your schools.

10. Social Media: With social media being such an important part of youth’s lives, we need to make extraordinary attempts to reach youth when these major events occur.

11. Resources for Parents: Parents may reach out for resources and providing them with tips on how to have these important conversations can provide a sense of context and safety.
