A Note from the Principal
Day 34/180
I love this time of year! Students have settled into their routines and expectations, teachers are in a rhythm and diving deeper into their curriculum, and yet the school year still feels fresh and exciting. There is a great energy throughout the Jacobs, and with so much happening in the weeks ahead, there is certainly plenty to look forward to!
In just a few short weeks, we will host one of our biggest school community events, the Turkey Trot! While this event certainly showcases our students' perseverance, school spirit, and athleticism, it has also grown into a wonderful opportunity to incorporate the arts across grades K through 7. In addition to students singing, our JMS Band will be performing as well. Bringing all of these pieces together takes a tremendous amount of coordination, planning, and practice, much of which is already underway.
I mention this because I want to give families a little insight into a scheduling decision we have made regarding our Winter Concert. The preparation required for the Turkey Trot, particularly in our music classes, naturally takes time away from rehearsals that would otherwise be dedicated to a concert during the holiday season. After consulting with our music department, we have decided to move forward with this year's Winter Concert in late January. This adjustment will give our students and teachers the time they need to prepare for both events and put their best foot forward. And, with a little luck, Mother Nature will cooperate and we will avoid another Snowmageddon! We are confident this schedule will provide the best experience for our students and families while allowing both events to receive the attention they deserve.
Of course, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, Halloween is right around the corner! Next Friday, October 30, students in grades PreK through 7 are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes to school. We always enjoy seeing the creativity and excitement that comes with this day, but we also want to ensure that costumes are appropriate for the school setting and allow students to participate safely in their regular school activities. Please take a moment to review our Halloween costume expectations.
As always, thank you for your continued partnership and support. There is a lot happening aboard the Pirate Ship, and we look forward to sharing these experiences with our students and families in the weeks ahead!

The Superintendent's Weekly Message
At the start of this school year, the Hull School Committee partnered with the school leadership team to offer our students “A Gift of Presence" for the new school year. By requiring that Personal Electronic Devices were “Off and Away Throughout the School Day”, our students were freed up to be more present for their academic pursuits from bell-to-bell. Our educators report that this simple shift has created an environment with fewer distractions and more attention on learning.
We want to thank our students, families and caregivers for their cooperation as we implement this new policy. To date, we have had very few violations of the new policy (14 students) with less than a handful of parents picking up devices after a second violation. We have observed more students talking to each other in the lunchroom and the climate feels more focused on academics.
The final school committee policy, JICI, was approved on October 5th and is now being incorporated into the school handbooks at both Jacobs School and Hull High School. This message is the parental communication about changes to that section of the school handbook.
The LINK to a short survey on the fall open house held at each school is still live. Please give us feedback on this annual school tradition aimed at parents, caregivers and families.
