Big Idea

Quiz Quiz Trade is a cooperative-learning Kagan structure that has students review information with other students by asking and answering questions with one another. The educator walks around the room listening and noting which concepts need to be reviewed or practiced more. This gets students up and moving. It is highly engaging and collaborative.

Directions

1. Write questions (or definitions) on index cards, or squares of paper. On the back of each paper, write the answer to the question (or the vocabulary word). I type mine in 2 columns, cut them out and fold them in half.

2. Students stand and pair up.

3. Partner A reads the question to partner B. Partner B answers. Partner A praises if correct or coaches if incorrect.

4. They switch roles and partner B asks Partner A the question on their paper. Partner B praises if correct or coaches if incorrect.

5. After thanking one another, they exchange papers and move on to another partner and follow steps 3-5 again and again until the educator stops them.

6. The educator walks around the room listening and noting the concepts, questions or words that students struggle with.

When to use

This strategy can be used as an icebreaker for the students to get to know one another, to introduce vocabulary, to review vocabulary, review for an assessment, after reading. The list goes on and on, it can be used at any time.

Strategy Variations

1. With Inside/Outside circle strategy: Divide the class in two equal groups. Have one group make a circle and face out. Have the other group make a circle around the first group and face in. Their partner is the person across from them. After quizzing and trading, upon the teacher's signal, one circle moves to the left or right and they are facing a new partner. Quiz quiz trade again. *If your class is lively or you have space constraints, have the kids in the circles pass the cards instead of the students moving.

2. With vocabulary charades. Partners take turns acting out the vocabulary word and guessing. (can be a pre-taught TPR action)

3. With vocabulary Pictionary. Partners carry small whiteboards and markers with them. Partners take turns drawing the vocabulary and guessing.

4. Have the students create questions and answers.

5. To provide more structure when students find a partner you can use Kagan's "stand up/hands up/pair up" to help them find a partner. (Students stand up, put their hands up, mingle to find a pair - high five their partner, put their hands down)
