WEEK ENDING IN 03/11/2022

Dear OSES Families,

This week marks the end of the third quarter and the beginning of Spring Break. Whether this is your first year at OSES, or in some cases, your seventh, I hope we continue to meet your expectations as your school of choice. Being at OSES is a choice that is made by each family and we hope student.

Our annual parent survey will be sent home over the next few days. Please take a few minutes to complete this important task that results in valuable data used to make important decisions.

We also invite your family to share photos from the break. Our yearbook will have a page dedicated to sharing your journeys and hopefully some lazy days. Information to order yearbooks will be shared soon and the directions to share the photos.

Be safe,

Mr. Singleton

KINDERGARTEN

This week in Social Studies we have been learning about different jobs people do and the tools they use for these jobs. We have also learned about US currency.

In Science we have had lots of hands on fun performing different STEM/science experiments.

Next week is spring break. We hope you take this week to spend time with your families, unwind, and reset. Have a safe and fun break. We will see you when we return to school on Monday March 21st.

FIRST

Ms. Keene’s class started their unit on Money by identifying and sorting different coins, as well as learning a catchy money song to help them remember the values. They also learned how the stem of a plant moves water and nutrients to the rest of the plant by observing and collecting data on celery stalks placed into colored water.

SECOND

Second grade participated in some fun MAR10 Day activities on March 10th as well as their 3rd Quarter AR Party. Also, check out some of Mrs. Waugh’s awesome non-fiction book reports!
Ms. Waugh’s class also combined what they learned in Math about measuring liquid volume with science. They had to measure 25 mL of juice (or gastric acid) and combine it with crushed crackers to observe what happens during digestion.

THIRD

Myers’ room was transformed into a donut shop and the kids solved math problems related to graphing and measurement. They were be the shop keepers trying to keep up with the sales. In McFarland’s room, her students are excited to get started on their State Float projects and have started research on their state in the West Region.

FOURTH

Ms. Michetti's class has been studying the cultural and historical significance of St. Patrick's Day and engineering traps to catch a leprechaun in action!

Miss Smythe’s class worked on their own energy transfer machines on Wednesday during class. They were encouraged to bring items for Thursday as well and continue to redesign and work through the engineering process. All of them are encouraged to look at the energy whiz competition in April and one lucky team will have their registration paid if they are interested. Please check Google classroom on Fridays and Mondays for any weekly updates. To see some of the energy transfer machines in action, check out our Instagram account.

FIFTH

This week students in Ms Berray and Ms Galan’s classes presented their project on fables and adages. Students presented their fable and created games for the class to play to check understanding of common fable elements.

On Thursday, students celebrated Pi day by creating augmented reality pages, taking part in an escape room, creating Pi-ku (haikus about pi) and even eating pie! Then students celebrated making their AR goal for the quarter! What a great start to spring break!

SIXTH

In February, the OSES Choir celebrated Black History Month by learning four African American songs and recording a concert! You can view the concert here: https://www.wevideo.com/view/2594459864

This weekend, the 6th grade students went to the Regional Finals for the History Bee in Tampa! Mr. Rego was able to join the students there and witness quite a few qualify for Nationals, which will be held in Orlando this summer! Congratulations to all the 6th graders who participated and to those who also qualified for Nationals!

SPECIALS

PE is beginning a game called hula hut throw down. The game requires builders, attackers, and defenders, students this week are working on throwing different objects into different size goals, each goal is worth a certain number of hula hoops, once a team obtains six hula hoops they build a hula hut. The opposing team can break down a hula hut once it's build, defenders must try to keep their structure from being knocked over. The most hula huts in 10 minutes is the winner.

SCIENCE

Our students that scored a 90% or higher on the last science test were entered into a drawing for an Amazon Gift Card. If your child is on this list, grownups, check your email for a gift card! Thank you to the Dudani family for sponsoring the drawing!

K Jesiah, 1st Mairine, 2nd Nathan, 3rd Samatha, 4th Anna, 5th Anya, 6th Shriyansh
