Hello Rising Sun Families,

We have a few pieces of important information to share with everyone for this upcoming week. First, let's recap some highlights from this passed week! We had our first Breakfast with Buddies with over 50 families in attendance! Families came together to learn about our new PBIS and play a little game to make that learning fun! We also had our first SUPRISE ATTENDANCE DAY! This is a random day that will happen throughout the school year to celebrate the students that are coming to school each day! These days are not announced. This week students were randomly selected from a wheel of names and once their name was selected they had the opportunity to throw a water balloon at Mrs. Isaac and Mrs. Gonzalez! As I am sure you can imagine, this was super exciting for students and a memory maker (check out the pictures below)!

Important announcements for this upcoming week:

Please do not arrive to line up in the car loop until 8:20am. We have cars that are starting to line up at 8:00am and it is then blocking staff parking spaces.

Our RSES Open House is this upcoming Thursday, September 24th: 5:30-6:30pm. This is the time that is set aside for families to learn about their child's classroom routines, expectations and important grade level information. We hope to see everyone there!

Our first Bubblegum Day is this Friday!!! Please remember to send money with your student if they are participating. Due to the number of students and the promptness of the Bubblegum/Squishy sale (happening first thing in the morning) we will not be accepting any late money arrival.

Also, happening on Friday the 25th, is DOLLY DAY at RSES. We are celebrating and honoring all of the work that Dolly Parton did to promote literacy through the millions of books that she sent out across our nation. Let's wear pink for Dolly Day!

We are asking that each family complete this survey. This will give us valuable information that will guide our planning for events and family support throughout the school year. Thank you to families who have already completed this survey!

Be sure to take notice of the events and important dates in this newsletter. We are looking forward to a great week ahead!

Nurse Jane Memorial Courtyard

This spring, our teachers and members of the community worked to revitalize the RSES courtyard in memory of one of our beloved school nurses. We have refreshed and replaced the furniture and plantings to create an inviting space for students and staff.

We hope to continue the renovations and would welcome any donations as we look forward to replacing some of the landscaping and hardscaping to make the area safer for our students.

A Message From Nurse Heather

Welcome Back!

As we begin a new school year, I would like to welcome everyone back and share a few important reminders to help keep our students safe and healthy throughout the year.

Medication Reminders

  • All medications must be brought to school by an adult and accompanied by a completed medication authorization form. Authorization forms are available in the school office at any time.
  • Students may not keep medications in their backpacks. This includes Tylenol, Motrin, allergy medications, cough drops, and other over-the-counter medications. Please do not send medications to school in backpacks, as this creates a safety risk for our students. Help me help keep our kids safe!
  • Medications will not be accepted without a completed and correctly filled-out medication authorization form.
  • Medications must be brought in their original, correctly labeled containers/bottles.
  • The school may keep no more than a one-month supply of daily medication at a time. Families will need to replenish medications as they run low. I will send reminders home with your child as needed.

Immunization Records

All required immunization records are due to the school by the first day of school. If you have questions or have misplaced a required form, please contact the school office or stop by so we can help provide a replacement.

Allergies

It is very important to notify the School Nurse of any known allergies. This information will be shared confidentially and on a need-to-know basis with your child's teacher and our kitchen staff, as appropriate, to help ensure your child's safety.

Thank you for your help and cooperation as we start another wonderful school year! I look forward to seeing everyone and helping keep our students healthy, happy, and safe.

💕As we approach the third week of school and the "new" is starting to wear off, there can be an increase in "I don't want to go to school today" or more tears when saying goodbye. Here are some tips for Separation Anxiety if your child is struggling:

  • Create a routine for your morning- the consistency helps!
  • Read "The Kissing Hand" book and create your own goodbye ritual for the mornings.
  • Practice positive affirmations to use throughout the day "I miss home, but school is a fun place too with lots to learn!"
  • Encourage them to lean on our support here at school! (Mrs. Ragan, Mrs. Linkous, Teachers, etc)
  • Stay positive- as hard as it can be to see your child upset, try your best to stay calm and reassuring.

🎒If your child is in need of a backpack or lunch box, please let me know!

If you or your child need support, please don't hesitate to reach out! I am here to help
🧡 I can be reached by email at krragan@ccps.org or 410-378-4493.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Bus Assignments

All of the bus information for students returning was sent out last week. If you did not receive this information, please first check your SPAM folder, then contact the main office. This information is to be a reminder of the bus information for those students that are using bus transportation. The times are subject to change due to traffic and road conditions as well as students being added or deleted. As a reminder, I encourage you to download the free “WheresTheBus” parent app at www.ccps.org/86 to know when your student’s bus will arrive.

This app utilizes GPS technology on our school buses to allow you as a parent to know when your child’s bus will arrive at their bus stop right from your phone or computer. The system also provides the CCPS Transportation Services Department and bus contractors with additional capabilities to even more effectively manage the bus fleets. It is important to note that in order to maintain information security, you will need to provide your child’s student ID number, date of birth, and provide email confirmation before you will be able to utilize the app. Please carefully read the information below before completing the app registration:

• You should register at www.wheresthebus.com prior to trying to access the app. This works most effectively on a computer and not a cell phone.

• IMPORTANT: Please note the following prior to accessing the online registration: o You will need to know your student’s ID number and date of birth in order to register. Contact your child’s school if you need assistance in finding this information. o If you have more than one student in CCPS, be sure to enter ALL students' names and ID numbers when you register. The app will not allow you to add additional students after registration is complete.

• Visit the website www.wheresthebus.com and select “Set up an account” under “Parents” then select Cecil County Public Schools from the District drop-down menu.

• Upon completing the login information, you will receive an email confirmation.

• You can download the WheresTheBus app from Android and Apple app stores, and will be able to login with the information that you provided during registration.

If you have difficulties in downloading the app or completing the online registration, contact Customer Support at support@wheresthebus.com. The support team will reply within twenty-four hours.

Parent Drop Off

Any student arriving to school NOT by bus, should be dropped off in the car rider loop. You do not need to register as a car rider for drop-off. The doors will open at 8:40am and students will be directed to the cafeteria to wait for the bell to ring. Please do not dismiss students from your car until staff members are present. Students may not be dropped off in the parking lot or bus loop. Doors will close promptly at 8:55am. If you arrive later than 8:55am, please park in the front lot, not the bus loop, and follow signage to the main office to sign your student in.

Parent Pick-up

  • Parents wishing to utilize the car rider loop for dismissal must fill out the Car Rider Loop Sign-up Form. This form will be available during the back to school social.
  • Students are not permitted to be picked up in the car rider loop unless a legal guardian has filled out the proper form.

Office Sign Out

  • Students may be signed out from our office until 3:15pm (1:35 on Wednesday) for early dismissal. After 3:15pm we ask that you wait in the cafeteria, not the main lobby. After 3:15, any parent pick up students signed out will be held in the classrooms and be dismissed after all buses have been dismissed. This is for the safety of our students and staff members.
  • Sending in a note with your student regarding early dismissal is recommended as this helps the teachers with relaying homework and other classroom news before the student leaves for the day.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT

Kindergarten enrollment is now open! If you have a kindergarten that will be coming to RSES please enroll as soon as possible. Early enrollment helps our school staff better plan for the upcoming school year! https://www.ccps.org/.../student.../how-to-enroll-into-ccps

Bullying, Harassment and Intimidation Policy Bullying, Harassment and Intimidation Policy

CCPS Online Bullying Form

Cecil County Public Schools has developed and published its version of the Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation Form. This form should be used to report alleged incidents of bullying, harassment, or intimidation that has occurred during the current school year on school property, at a school-sponsored activity, at an event off school property, on a school bus, on the way to and/or from school, or through electronic communication on or off school property

All students have the right to be free from bullying, harassment, or intimidation. Cecil County Public Schools (CCPS) is committed to providing a safe, productive, and inclusive learning environment.

  1. Bullying – is unwanted, demeaning behavior among students that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or is highly likely to be repeated, over time. To be considered bullying, the behavior must be intentional and include: 1) an imbalance of power (students who bully use their physical, emotional, social, or academic power to control, exclude, or harm others), and 2) repetition (bullying behaviors happen more than once or are highly likely to be repeated based on evidence gathered).
  2. Cyberbullying – is bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. Cyberbullying can occur through texting, apps, or online via social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or hurtful content about another student. It can include sharing personal or private information about someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation.
  3. Harassment – includes actual or perceived intentional negative actions or words that offend, ridicule, or demean another student with regard to race, skin color, ethnicity, national origin, immigration status, family/parental or marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, ancestry, physical attributes, socioeconomic status, physical or mental ability, or disability. This will also include abusive or threatening speech, symbols, or writing that expresses prejudice against a person or group of people.
  4. Intimidation – is any communication or action directed against another student that threatens or induces a sense of fear and/or inferiority. Retaliation may be considered a form of intimidation.
