Newbery PTA Cuts the Ribbon on New Playground a Decade in the Making

More than a decade of bake sales, fund runs, and community fundraising came to life this spring at John Newbery Elementary, where a brand-new playground is taking shape β€” and students couldn't be more excited about it.

The John Newbery PTA has been working for over ten years to replace playground equipment that was originally installed in the 1990s. Through their annual fund run and a series of community fundraisers, the PTO raised $125,000 β€” a testament to the dedication of Newbery families and the power of a community rallying around its kids.

"Just seeing this project get completed after so many years β€” it's been so rewarding," said PTA President Mareena Pierce. Last week, the PTA held a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the whole school in attendance to commemorate the official opening of the new play structure.

But perhaps the most meaningful part of the process happened before a single piece of equipment was installed. PTA representatives visited 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade classrooms to ask students directly what they wanted in a new playground. The feedback was enthusiastic, and it shows in the finished product. The new playground features a zipline, two sets of monkey bars, and a spinning cyclone.

Indoor Percussion Hosts Middle School Camp

WSD middle schoolers got the chance to try their hands at percussion during a full day of percussion hosted by the WHS Golden Apple Indoor Percussion.

18 students learned about different instruments from high schoolers and band instructors, and then had the opportunity to perform as a big group for their families.

The Indoor Percussion program hopes to make this an annual tradition because getting the next generation of WHS musicians excited about band and percussion is exactly what this program is all about.

Budget Bite: Year-End Update

Year End Budget Bite

We know school finance can feel complicated β€” that's why Superintendent Kalahar has been breaking it down in our Budget Bites video series. And now, the final episode is here. In this update, he'll share:

βœ… How our federal funding was restored returning $2.9 million to our budget

βœ… How we reduced our budget target from $5.4 million down to $2.5 million

βœ… What we are excited about heading into 2026-27, including Accelerated Pathways, WestSide expansion, and the November bond

βœ… A celebration of our School Board, named 2026 Regional Board of the Year

Over four years, our district has navigated $18.7 million in total reductions and we have done it while keeping students at the center of every decision. We are proud of that work, and we are grateful for your patience and support throughout this process.

Thank you for being part of the Wenatchee School District community. We have a bright year ahead.
