A Note from the Principal

Forest Hills Families,

We've had a fabulous first month of school! Students have learned routines and procedures while also soaking in new content from reading, math, science, social studies and all our enrichment classes!

Please remember that starting after Labor Day, parents/custodians may come and eat lunch with their child. If eating lunch with your child, we ask that you eat at the small round tables at both ends of the cafeteria or outside at the picnic tables. You will need to sign in at our front office with your photo ID and get a visitor's badge. We will not allow anyone other than those listed on your child's pickup list to eat with students in the cafeteria.

As always, if I can be of assistance to you, please stop by my office or reach out anytime!

Morning Drop Off & Check-Ins

At 7:20 AM, the Kindergarten/Sibling drop off location and the 3rd/4th drop off location will be blocked off. This is because teachers on duty must get to class to begin instruction. If you arrive to campus at 7:20 or later, you will need to drop your child off at the front office. Staff will be outside the front office until 7:30 welcoming students.

Any student who arrives after 7:30 MUST be accompanied by an adult and signed in at the front office.

Discovering Decodables!

Families, as you've already seen, students in grades K-3 are bringing home one or more decodable books each week. This is part of our new reading curriculum, Open Court Reading. These are short stories that help your child build fluency through repeated reading. I'd like to start a challenge called "Discovering Decodables!" If you can catch your child reading his/her decodable at home (or anywhere after school), please snap a quick picture and email to lfowler@florencek12.org. I will then upload your child's picture to our slideshow that students watch each day in the cafeteria and also to our Facebook page! I cannot stress enough the value that repeated reading of these decodables will bring to your child's overall reading fluency!

Here are some tips for your child to follow when reading his/her decodable:

1. Track words with his/her finger.

2. Read with expression.

3. Pause for punctuation marks.

4. Read aloud once or twice a night.

5. Discuss what the book was about.
