What a memorable first week of school it has been! While the unexpected internet outage has presented some challenges, it has also been wonderful to see our staff do what they do best—adapt, connect with students, and build strong classroom communities. Throughout the week, students and teachers have focused on establishing routines, strengthening relationships, and beginning their important curricular work together.

We have also appreciated the support and presence of the Westfield Fire Department and Westfield Police Department, whose members have periodically visited our school this week as we began practicing safety procedures. I am happy to report that on Thursday we successfully tested our fire alarm system and completed our first fire drill of the school year.

At this time, email access may be limited. Families are encouraged to use hand-written notes to communicate with staff.

Looking ahead, Back-to-School Night will proceed as originally scheduled next Thursday, September 10; please see below for specific scheduling information.

On behalf of the staff, we hope everyone enjoys the holiday weekend, and we'll look forward to welcoming back our students on Tuesday, September 8.

This week, our students were thrilled to enjoy our beautiful newly installed playground! Workers were also on site painting the lines for our new basketball court, which will be ready for students to enjoy Tuesday, September 8.

You may also notice temporary orange fencing surrounding portions of the playground and basketball court. This fencing is in place to protect newly seeded areas as we work to establish healthy grass throughout the field and surrounding spaces. Once construction begins on the school addition, a portion of the field will also temporarily be used for staging equipment. While these changes may create some short-term inconveniences, they are all temporary—and we know the improvements to our school will be well worth it!

The Governor’s Office has shared a collection of back-to-school resources to support the health, wellness, and well-being of New Jersey students and families. We are passing along the resources that are most relevant to our school community for your information and use as needed. We hope you find these materials helpful as we begin the new school year.

Book Fair Student Shopping

September 10, in the school gym! Students will shop with their classes during the school day, and the Fair will reopen at 6:00 p.m. during Back to School Night for families to shop.

New this year: First-grade parents/caregivers are invited to join their child during their class shopping time! Prior registration is required (click HERE to register if you are a 1st grade parent), and all participating adults must present a government-issued photo ID upon arrival.

  • 9:00–9:20: Ms. Martin
  • 9:20–9:40: Ms. Redman
  • 9:40–10:00: Ms. Goldstein & Ms. Kazanecki

Families who prefer not to send cash may set up an eWallet through the Washington Book Fair homepage. Please print the eWallet receipt and send it with your child on the day of the Fair. We also ask that you email your child’s teacher to let them know your child will be shopping with an eWallet.

While shopping during Back to School Night, families may also purchase a book from their teacher’s basket to donate to the classroom library—a wonderful way to share the gift of reading!

Unable to attend? Visit the Washington Book Fair homepage to shop online from September 9–22. Washington School will receive credit for online purchases.
