A Teacher WILL Save the World!

As we enter the end of the school year, we are tired, relieved, and happy all at the same time. Teaching is definitely an emotional roller coaster.

What society fails to acknowledge is that teachers are saving the world one student at a time.

Talk to any adult and they will tell you about a teacher that encouraged them when no one else did, or ignited a passion to pursue an interest. What other profession can say that?! NONE!

On the flip side, you can also talk to any adult and they will tell you about a teacher who made them feel dumb, and forever altered their mindset about school or a subject area. Thanks (sarcastic tone) to my high school algebra teacher, I am still living under the cloud that I am horrible at math so why even attempt. In fact, when faced with even the most basic math, my brain literally switches "off".

Teaching is tough and not for the fainthearted. It takes minute by minute self-coaching to make it through the day and be the hero students and our world so desperately need.

So, while you enjoy the perks of another Teacher Appreciation week, I encourage you to look at everyday as, "It's a beautiful day to save a "life"-Grey's Anatomy. Teachers will save the world!

Apple 'Clips' App

An App with so many possibilities for both a flipped classroom and student-generated work is Apple's 'Clips'. It's free AND comes in 36 languages! What I like most about it is the capability to add live titles/animated captions to your video.

Reasons for using closed captions:

  • learning aid to promote comprehension, engagement, retention, and accuracy
  • poor audio
  • clarification when teachers are difficult to understand
  • linguistic accommodation for English Learners
  • promotes listening and speaking skills
  • accommodation for hearing impaired
