Principal Message
Hi North Star Families!
April was the month of experiences...field trips, chicks & ducklings, Tower Theater presenters, Earth Day Celebration, artist in residence, author visits, and 5th grade portraits, just to name a few! There are some incredible photos throughout the newsletter highlighting our "Amazing April"!
Mark Your Calendars!
We have a busy end-of-year schedule, filled with fun activities that bring our school community together! Please pay close attention to Upcoming Dates and PTO Happenings sections of the newsletter.
Youth Truth
We have the results of our Youth Truth Survey - thank you to those that provided feedback! Our highlights include: relationships, parent/guardian satisfaction, and a sense of safety at school. An area for growth is communication about student progress outside of report cards and conferences. We value the feedback and are working on ideas in this area for next year. Stay tuned!
North Star Vision and Mission
We are in the final phase of our vision and mission process. The next steps include:
- Engagement of our broader community.
- Voting and Feedback on vision & mission drafts by staff, families, and students.
- Review of votes and feedback.
- Announcement of North Star Elementary’s Vision and Mission by the end of the school year!!!
Here's to a great rest of the year with many celebrations ahead!!!
Take care,
Beth Martin

Walk and Roll to School, May 7!
Wednesday, May 7 Participants will meet at Harvest Park from 6:50-7:10 a.m. At 7:10, participants will walk, roll, or ride their bikes together over to North Star Elementary. Students will receive a doughnut hole when they arrive at North Star and will be entered into a raffle with a chance to win cool prizes. ALL North Star students and families are welcome to participate! Students in grades K-2 are required to be accompanied by a chaperone.
1st Grade Ducklings!
Our 1st grade classes incubated duck eggs and hatched ducklings. The whole experience was amazing and students immediately fell in love with the ducklings. Projects like this are a reminder of the power of experiential learning. It will certainly be one of the school memories that will stay with them through life.
Our kindergarten classes hatched chicks as well. The whole A Wing was filled with excitement, curiosity, and wonder. The ducklings and chicks will be moving on from North Star in the next week or so to their new homes.
3rd Grade Music and Mindfulness
Tower Theater brought Music and Mindfulness to our North Star 3rd graders in April. The weather was perfect and the students were so engaged in the music. Each student wore headphones and listened to the music and sounds from the musician facilitating the experience. Tower Theater has been an amazing school partner by bringing so many wonderful experiences to our students!
Lunch Outside!
With the warmer spring weather, comes the opportunity to eat lunch outside in the courtyard. For the remainder of the school year, we will enjoy lunch outside - weather permitting. It has been so fun to see the joy and smiles at lunch by simply being outside. One of the most heartwarming parts has been the excitement our older students have in watching the younger students play at recess while they eat lunch. Even small moments like this bring our school community even closer together.
Earth Day and Green Team
Our North Star Green Team did an amazing job with organizing and leading an Earth Day Celebration on April 22. Buddy classes went through the stations together and we are always proud of our how our older students serve as mentors to their buddies.
The activities were student-led, well-planned, and very engaging. A huge shout-out to Mrs. Grube, the Green Team, and all the volunteers that joined the Earth Day Celebration!
Galaxy Party!
We did it! Students and classrooms have reached 100 school-wide constellations and it's time to celebrate! We're having our Galaxy Party on Friday, May 9, during the school day. It will be a fun day filled with a variety of activities throughout that students will rotate through. Congratulations Navigators!
A Note from our School Counselor
Guidance: We’ve had a wonderful time this year learning about Kelso’s Choices and introducing the Zones of Regulation school-wide! Guidance lessons will be optional for classrooms based on need throughout the rest of the school year.
Lunch Buddies: The Lunch Buddy program continues! If you do not want your child to participate, please let me know. You can email me at kaily.filkins@bend.k12.or.us.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns about your student. I look forward to connecting with you!
Volunteer Background Check
If you are interested in going on a field trip with your student’s class, or think you may be interested in the next few years, please fill out a volunteer background check! It takes 48-72 hours to clear, and is valid for two years. Please consider filling this out! If you have not filled it out, or it hasn’t yet cleared, you will not be able to go on a field trip or volunteer with your student’s class. There will be no exceptions.
