What is Florida Cane Quest?
Cane Quest® is an orientation and mobility challenge for cane travelers in grades 3-12. It was created by Braille Institute to challenge and motivate students to learn and improve O&M skills. Florida Cane Quest is a regional event held annually for cane travelers in Florida who are divided into the following four categories:
- Scouts – grades 3-6
- Pioneers – grades 7-12 (new cane travelers or those working on basic skills)
- Explorers – grades 7-9
- Trailblazers – grades 10-12
Scouts and Pioneers work with a teammate (family member or volunteer) on campus to earn coins at each skill station and exchange coins for prizes at the end.
Explorers and Trailblazers follow a route on and off campus with a teacher, O&M instructor, or trained volunteer as their "Shadow" to monitor them along the way. This year, contestants will earn points to shop for prizes!
Opening Ceremony
Contestants walk through the cane arch for the Opening Ceremony.

See what others have to say about Florida Cane Quest!
I love cane quest, and my students look forward to it every year!
The organization and pre-event activities were exceptional and very engaging for both adults and students.
I enjoyed the competitive nature of the event for our students and their families. I think it's a great way to show that solid cane skills make for confident travelers, ready to take on whatever O&M challenge or environment they face.
Loved seeing the kids challenge themselves and engage with the different stations. Seeing pride on children’s faces was a consistent emotion throughout the day and I loved that.
CaneQuest is a great event because it's a fun way for kids to test their orientation and mobility skills. Trying to follow instructions to stay on a specific route makes kids realize what skills they need to work on so they can be more independent in the future.
It’s always a joy to be with other professionals but it is especially rewarding to watch all the students enjoy their day.
