During the third marking period in Shared Reading and ELA we will be recognizing Black History Month by reading biographies that include “A Picture Book of Frederick Douglass”, “Rosa Parks” and “When Marian Sings”. In addition to the books that we will be reading, we will also begin preparing students for the MCAP test, which is a state standardized test used to assess students' reading fluency, comprehension and writing skills. Students will engage in a series of lessons and activities that are similar to what they will see on the MCAP test.

In the 3rd marking period, students will continue to learn and practice strategies to add and subtract numbers within 1,000. Please continue to practice adding and subtracting with your child at home. Your 3rd grader has learned how to use place value to add and subtract. They can use these strategies when solving at home too. These are foundational strategies that can help them with higher level concepts later in 4th and 5th grade. We will review multiplication this marking period by, multiplying by multiples of 10. Please continue to have your child practice their multiplication facts at home each week. If you need flash cards please let me know. In this marking period your 3rd grader will be solving word problems using all 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). All operations we have previously learned. This is why it is so important to keep practicing facts at home all year long. Keep reviewing with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division flash cards at home. Please let me know if you need flash cards. Your 3rd grader will also be learning about fractions. We will compare fractions, find equivalency, and use a variety of hands on manipulatives to support our learning in class. There is a lot to accomplish this marking period so please be sure your child is getting a good night's rest each night. Please make sure you check their homework packet each week to see what skill we are learning in math class. And please call or email me anytime for support. I am here to help!
