ASD Highlights & Happenings
October 2026
Dear Abington School District Community,
October is always a busy month across Abington School District, but this year, I had the distinct pleasure of getting to be part of so many once-in-a-lifetime milestones that represent the strength of our school community and its deeply rooted history.
The month started with the dedication of the Ash Carter Courtyard at Abington Senior High, a project that was organized entirely by a group of alumni from the Class of 1972, who wanted to do something to honor their lifelong friend and classmate, Dr. Ashton B. Carter, U.S. Secretary of Defense from 2015-2017. With the help of the Abington Educational Foundation, they were able to raise enough money to fund a beautiful new greenspace that represents Dr. Carter's love of his alma mater, and serves as a symbol of the strong start in life he got right here at Abington.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to attend the Centennial Celebrations of two of our District's seven elementary schools, Overlook and Roslyn. Both events offered an opportunity for families to gather as a school community and enjoy food and games alongside current teachers and staff. My favorite parts of the events, however, were how alumni and former staff members also returned to their old schools to be part of the celebrations. Each program provided an opportunity to hear about the schools' 100 years of history, while also getting to learn about heartwarming and/or funny memories of what life used to be like "back in the day".
All three of these events reminded me of who we are as a school district. Our elementary schools are cornerstones of our Township's many neighborhoods, where our community's youngest children go to learn, play, grow and, quite often, make friendships that last a lifetime.
Thank you to everyone who joined us in these celebrations that will hopefully become milestones our current students remember forever.
Regards,
Dr. Jeffrey Fecher

What's Happening
ASD Celebrates the USA
Throughout the remainder of 2026, schools across the District are continuing to celebrate, honor, and reflect upon our nation's Semiquincentennial and its 250-year history.
Civic Engagement
This month, representatives from the League of Women Voters of Abington/Cheltenham/Jenkintown visited Abington Senior High School to talk to older students about how to be civically engaged -- either by registering to vote, or serving as a poll worker. They also provided multiple opportunities to help students over age 18 register to vote for the first time ahead of the November mid-term elections!
Creative Expression
To close out the final months of 2026, all secondary students have been invited to participate in a Creative Expressions Contest celebrating America's 250th Birthday. Using a medium of their choice, students in grades 6-12 are asked to respond to the prompt, "What Freedom Means to Me: Then, Now, and Tomorrow". Prospective participants should first fill out an interest form. Entries will be due Dec. 4.
Public Service
On October 22, Abington Senior High School hosted a 250th-themed Career Chatter focused on local government and the people behind our thriving communities, including representatives from the Abington School District Board of School Directors, the Abington Township Police Department and Rockledge Borough Council, among others. Students had an opportunity to ask questions about public service and how these professionals help keep the community safe, sustainable and prosperous.
National School Bus Safety Week
Each year, Abington School District and PennDOT participate in National School Bus Safety Week, which is celebrated every October. This year's theme, from October 19-23, was "Safe Rides, Everyday Heroes". During the week, Dr. Fecher visited the bus garage to thank the many members of the Transportation Department -- including the drivers, bus monitors, mechanics and more -- who are responsible for the safety of students as they travel to and from school each day.
Unity Day 2026
On October 21, schools across ASD recognized Unity Day 2026, the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. On this day, individuals, schools, communities, and businesses wore orange to unite for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.
At Roslyn Elementary, members of the school's Anti-Bullying Committee sold encouraging bracelets to spread positivity throughout the school community.
In Case You Missed It
All nine Abington School District schools were among just 68 schools statewide to have been recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for completing last year’s Governor’s School Breakfast Challenge! Completed in partnership with the District's foodservice provider, Chartwells, the goal of the challenge was to increase student participation in school breakfast, which is free for all students.

Attention parents/guardians of students who utilize our District transportation vehicles to travel to and from school: Download the Zonar MyView app for tracking the routes on which your student rides each day! This app is helpful should your student's bus ever encounter a delay along their travel route.
