HELLO,IT'S HIM : MR.CHONG HWA XUN
Born to be a programmer
One Step Closer To Mr Chong Hwa Xun
Chong Hwa Xun is a final year undergraduate student. He is a senior with a lot of experience, especially in Programme Department. He is from Pahang, Kuantan. Moreover, he was also one of the Boards of Directors of UMAC in session 2014/2015. He is always active in his involvement in the UMAC’s event and continuously contributes towards UMAC till now.
Attractive of UMAC
When he was a first year student, he was inspired by the way his second year seniors in UMAC conducted a big and successful event. Hwa Xun was so impressed by their ability to do so and he feels that UMAC is awesome. This was the sole reason that made him to initiate his first step to join the interview and being secured as a programmer in MASC 2013. He was quite wondering about the preparation for such event which is open to other universities. He desired to start his new chapter in UMAC when he became an Accounting Student at University of Malaya.
Spend time, Keep learning
In the sharing session, Hwa Xun said that he polished his soft skills and gained treasurable experiences that is obviously impossible to acquire from text books. For instance, he learnt to be a good public speaker since a programmer needs to be outstanding to conduct any event. Before this, he was a person who doesn’t dare to speak with confidence in front of the others. Besides, he said that it was also an opportunity to build up the networking session, especially with the future employers and gain advice from some successful person in this career. He also appreciates and praise his Head of Department during MASC 2013, Ms.Lai Lik Jun for teaching him the skills with patience and motivated him all the time. Her well-planned attitude and her way of delivering her positive thoughts inspired him how to become a good leader for his upcoming events.
One big family
“It’s not likely only as friends, but it is another special family that accompanied me throughout my undergraduate’s life in UM.” Hwa Xun never regrets joining UMAC. He has always treasured everyone in UMAC who went through the ups and downs along him. He is grateful that after the event they still keep in touch with others. They share the special and important moments in their life when they meet each other in gathering session. Such like a happy family, they will even go out together. This is very valuable and we seldom experience it when we enter a working environment.
As a leader
When he was a Head of Programme Department, he thought he was ready to accept the challenges but actually he was not. He mentioned that it was a huge difference when he played a role as a junior member and then as a Head of Department. This time he could not figure out any plan to be implemented instead he needs to make decisions and consider every situation that might happen. He noticed the importance of communication. He said that teaching and giving advises without hurting the other is one of the things he learnt when he was a leader. He tried his best to maintain the good relationship between the department members and create a happy working environment for them. He makes sure that he himself became a role model and ensure that every one of his members were learning. As a Head of Department, he developed his critical thinking and able to make a well-planning. He said:” Although the others think that it is an unnecessary or a childish act to spend our study time in organising event, but for him it is worth to sacrifice his precious study time to gain leadership qualities and new friendship.”
Fun of Overtime
In Programme department, everyone, including the Head of Department need to conduct test game and find the suitable venue for the programme. For Hwa Xun, he still can remember that moment he falls down when running to the venue, the moment when he fight against his sleepiness and try to stay awake and energetic to prepare the gimmicks. That time he was looking for some materials and without anyone noticing he falls asleep and part of his body was covered by the cupboard. He also imagined that the toilet might be haunted when he goes to the faculty’s toilet in the midnight! This brings a lot of fun to himself and his members too. It is crystal clear that he really enjoyed his life fully by participating these events.
Listen to Hwa Xun
Hwa Xun also pointed out that juniors should appreciate the golden chance to study in local universities such as University of Malaya because there are many social engagement programmes and events compared to private universities. In addition, juniors must grab the opportunity to join and learn from seniors and to engage in every event not only under UMAC but also in other societies like AIESEC. However, he also hopes that the juniors will not forget to relax and enjoy the university life .Try to reach the limit and never underestimate ourselves. Balance the extra co-curriculum activities with the academic. Academic is a vital tool, or to make it simple, a passport for us in the future to earn a living.
