Growing More Than Plants: Gardening with Young Children
Gardening with young children is about more than planting seeds, it’s about growing skills that last a lifetime.
When toddlers and preschoolers dig in the soil, water plants, and watch things grow, they are building early science, math, and language skills. They also develop patience, responsibility, and confidence as they care for something living. Simple tasks like scooping dirt or pouring water help strengthen the small muscles needed for writing and everyday activities.
Gardening also creates meaningful connections. It brings families together, encourages outdoor play, and helps children understand where their food comes from, often leading to healthier eating habits.
The best part? You don’t need a big garden or special tools to get started.
Nebraska Extension’s Fit and Healthy Kids program offers free Let’s Go Outside – We Can Dig It! guides designed for children ages 0–5. These easy, hands-on activities use everyday materials and take less than 30 minutes.
No prep. No screens. Just fresh air, learning, and fun.

Picnic and barbecue season offers lots of opportunities for outdoor fun with family and friends. To protect yourself, your family, and friends from foodborne illness during warm-weather months, safe food handling when eating outdoors is critical. Read on for simple food safety guidelines for transporting your food to the picnic site and preparing and serving it safely once you’ve arrived. https://go.unl.edu/eating-outdoor #UNLFoodSafety
Cantaloupe and other melons present special food safety risks. Netted melons like cantaloupe grow on the ground and can come in contact with pathogens. Unlike other fruits, cantaloupe are not acidic and readily support the growth of pathogens once they are sliced open. Safe handling will keep your chances of getting sick low. https://go.unl.edu/melon #UNLFoodSafety
