MS 50 Updates: Week of November 13, 2023
Debate Tournament Saturday!
Our first Saturday debate tournament of the year is coming up this week Saturday, November 18! We will meet at MS 50 at 7AM to take busses up to IN-Tech Academy in the Bronx. This fall, our students are debating the resolution: Should school districts offer financial incentives for performance in school for K-12 students in the US? Ask your debater what evidence they have learned about this interesting topic! Debate families, please sign the permission slip that was shared on Operoo last week.
Want to join us on debate day? Volunteering to judge is a great way to learn more about debate and see young people from across the city engage with each other in a unique, exciting format. You will be trained prior to your first debate and a catered lunch and breakfast is provided. Interested in helping? Sign up at ms50.org/judge.

Classroom Spotlight: ELA
6th Grade: Finding Courage
7th Grade: Space and Adventure
In 7th Grade we will soon begin a unit titled The Terror and Wonder of Space. In this unit, students will explore fictional and nonfictional works on space travel and consider both the challenges and inspiration that space provides us. The texts we will read center on the Essential Question “Is space exploration a daring adventure or dangerous risk?” This open-ended question is intended to spark thoughtful discussion.
8th Grade: Fight for Freedom
Community Cultural Potluck
Join us for a cultural potluck event this Wednesday! The El Puente team is excited to invite you to save the date for a Cultural Potluck event on November 15th from 6PM to 8PM. Donations are welcome and appreciated! Beacon members will kick things off with singing and dancing from 6:10PM to 6:15PM. See you there for a night of food, fun, and community! Check out the flyer and RSVP at the link below.
Parent Teacher Conferences Feedback
We enjoyed meeting so many of you at Parent Teacher conferences last week Thursday! We appreciated the chance to share some of the amazing work that your students are completing every day at MS 50. We have been working hard to make virtual parent teacher conferences as effective as possible and would love your feedback! Thank you to those of you who have already completed our extended survey. We invite you to share your brief feedback with the poll below and can still complete the full survey at ms50.org/feedback.
How satisfied were you with conferences this fall?

i-Ready Homework Reminder
One of our goals this year is for every student at MS 50 to complete 30 minutes of i-Ready ELA lessons and 30 minutes of i-Ready math lessons as part of their homework every week. Teachers will check the previous week’s work every Monday. Students can use their @nycstudents account to log into i-Ready by visiting clever.com.
If logging in on an iPad, you must first download and login to the Clever app. You can then launch i-Ready from Clever and students will be logged in. Download this information sheet for more detailed instructions.
