Water Testing Update

Dear Center School Families and Staff,

This is an update based on follow-up water testing on the Center School kitchen faucet that was removed from service and replaced. We notified families and staff that the Water Department would conduct periodic follow-up testing. During a recent water screening for lead in the replaced kitchen faucet, no lead was detected.

If you have any questions, please contact Gene Jones, Director of Facilities.

From the Health Office:

Dear 3rd Grade Families,

Please send in a copy of your child's most recent physical exam to the health office before the end of the school year. Documentation of a recent physical exam is required before entering 4th grade.

If you have not already submitted a copy, please send it to me at Center School before the end of the school year, or to Mrs. Ripley at OHS at the beginning of next school year.

Thank you!

Nurse Balsis

Math Fact Fluency - Tips for Practice at Home

Center School teachers participated in math professional development this year as we implemented the new EnVisionMath program. Our math consultant focused on the importance of math fact fluency at our last meeting. Here are some ideas for home practice:

  • Math War: Use a deck of cards (0-9). Each player turns over two cards, says the sum or product correctly, and wins the cards.
  • Dice Roll Addition/Multiplication: Roll two dice (or 12-sided dice) and multiply or add them. For added challenge, roll three dice and mix operations.
  • Kaboom: Write math facts on popsicle sticks, including "Kaboom!" sticks. Players draw sticks and solve; if they get "Kaboom!", they return all their sticks.
  • Stairwell Addition: Label steps with numbers and have the child add or multiply the step number by a target number as they climb.
  • Driveway Chalk: Write equations in chalk and have the child jump to the correct answer.
  • Fact Family Houses: Pick three numbers (e.g., 2, 8, 16) and write the related addition/subtraction or multiplication/division facts.
  • Domino Math: Turn dominoes face down, pick one, and add or multiply the two sides.

  • Here are the Massachusetts Math Fluency Standards by the end of each grade level:

Kindergarten: Fluently add and subtract within 5.

Grade 1: Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

Grade 2: Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Grade 3: Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division. Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Student Absences: It is important for us to know if your child will be absent from school. Please call 508-758-2521, Press 2 for the School Nurse, and leave a message by 8:30 AM. Thank you!

As part of our arrival procedures, if parents/guardians do not notify us of their child's absence, we will call you to ensure your child's safety.

Visitors: All of our schools continue to use Raptor Technology for all visitors entering our buildings. All visitors and volunteers are required to have a valid driver’s license or Massachusetts-issued identification card to be scanned upon entering the building for any reason.

CORI Forms: CORI forms are valid for one calendar year. The Old Rochester School District requires all volunteers to complete the CORI process before they are permitted to volunteer in classrooms or attend field trips. The forms must be completed in person at the school, and a government-issued photo ID must be presented.

Your child's safety is our primary concern! Your cooperation and support with the following procedures are greatly appreciated.

    Morning Arrival:

School doors open at 8:15 AM, and school begins at 8:30 AM.

Car Arrival: Parents/Guardians may drop off students from 8:15 AM until 8:30 AM. Please use the Hammond Street entrance and follow the drop-off line around the side of the school. Please follow staff members' directions to assist with your child’s safe arrival. For safety, please have students exit the vehicle on the right side, closest to the school.

Late Arrivals: Parents/guardians must come into the school to sign their student in at the office if they arrive after 8:30 AM.
