4. The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) is partnering with the Trauma and Grief Center at The Hackett Center for Mental Health to offer Beyond Burnout: Exploring the Cost of Caring Lunch and Learn virtual events.

During the past 18 months and even prior to the pandemic, educators, administrators, and school safety professionals have had the strenuous task of caring for students and staff, in addition to caring for their own families and themselves. Utilizing a light-hearted, engaging approach, this presentation explores the ways in which our work impacts us as helping professionals. Participants will be given tools to decrease the risk for compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, and burn-out.

The discussion will then focus on enhancing compassion satisfaction and resilience through individualized strategies. This presentation seeks to re-frame the way we think about "self-care” and will include a live Q&A with the Director of School and Community Engagement for The Trauma and Grief Center at The Hackett Center for Mental Health.

Dates and Times

The lunch and learn virtual events will take place from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM Central Time.

5. Say What! Mini-Grant Kits

Say What! Mini-Grant Kits are the perfect free resource to assist youth groups in 6th-12th grade with their youth tobacco and vaping prevention efforts in the school and community setting. Here’s a look at the kits being offered this spring. Register your youth group today to request one.

Mental Health & Wellness Kit

For decades, the tobacco industry has marketed its products as a great way to relieve stress and increase mental well-being, but the fact is nicotine makes those feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression worse! This kit focuses on sharing the truth about how dangerous vaping and other nicotine products are to our mental health, and how youth can receive free, confidential help to quit.

Request this kit to see the positive difference you can make in your peers and community members!

Tobacco Litter Kit

Tobacco products aren’t only dangerous for people, but the environment and wildlife, too. Tobacco products like cigarette butts, vapes, and dip cans are some of the most littered items that are poisoning our planet. This kit features a vape waste bin for schools or community centers to store collected vapes for safe disposal as well as a tobacco litter log to track the cleanups your group hosts, what was collected, and how much. Your group can use that information to speak with local business owners or decision-makers to promote tobacco and vape-free establishments.

Request this kit today to help make your school and/or community a safer, cleaner place for everyone.

6. Texas Tobacco-Free Conference

The Say What! Conference offers a variety of opportunities for all youth groups working on tobacco-free policies, tobacco prevention-related issues, and other projects that may be occurring in the school or community.

Both youth and adult participants will be able to attend a variety of breakout sessions from Say What! Teen Ambassadors, Say What! youth groups, and experts from diverse fields discussing a range of youth tobacco prevention and enforcement topics.

Group sponsors and other adult participants will be able to attend specialized sessions that focus on youth-adult partnerships, positive youth development, and burnout prevention.

Dates: Tuesday, July 26th – Friday, July 29th
Location: DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Austin, Austin, Texas

Scholarship applications to attend the conference for free are available for 6th – 12th-grade school and community-based youth groups. Scholarships cover the costs associated with conference registration, lodging and all meals and snacks, access to hotel amenities, parking, a conference t-shirt, and materials.

Learn more about conference, registration, and conference scholarships by clicking here. The deadline to submit a scholarship application is April 15th. Registration for the conference closes on May 31st.

7. Say What! Texas Tobacco-Free Action Summits are Back and In Person!

Summits are led by the Say What!
