After four years of service to the Elgin Independent School District community and 34 years in public education, Dr.Jana Rueter has announced she will retire as Superintendent of Schools, effective December 31, 2026. Dr. Rueter’s last day as Superintendent will be June 30, 2026. Thereafter, she will assume the role of Superintendent Emeritus until her retirement date of December 31, 2026.
"After a deeply fulfilling tenure as Superintendent of Elgin ISD, I am announcing my retirement with an overflowing heart of gratitude and immense pride in all that this remarkable district has accomplished together," she said. "None of what we have achieved would have been possible without the extraordinary dedication of our administrative team, our talented and compassionate staff, and a community that has never wavered in its commitment to the success of every child. As I look forward to this next chapter, I am confident that the exceptional foundation we have built together will continue to propel EISD to even greater heights, and I remain forever grateful to have been a part of this incredible Wildcat family."
Board President Byron Mitchell praised Dr. Rueter on behalf of the Board of Trustees for her
ability to build a strong culture of collaboration both within the district and between the district
and the community.
“On behalf of the Board, we highly value the accomplishments in our school district under Superintendent Rueter’s leadership," Mr. Mitchell said. "Dr. Rueter has been a tireless visionary
for Elgin ISD over the past four years. Along with the Board, Dr. Rueter has focused Elgin ISD and its stakeholders on identifying and developing the strengths and gifts of every child. This vision culminated in our compelling purpose to provide choice and opportunity to all students throughout their experience in Elgin ISD and extending beyond graduation.”
District Highlights Under Dr. Rueter’s Leadership
During Dr. Rueter's tenure, the district experienced transformational growth and investment that has left a lasting impact on students, staff, and the broader community. Through strong community trust and civic engagement, Dr. Rueter led the successful passage of a $375 million bond package at a remarkable 68% approval rate, providing funding for the design and construction of Legacy Oak Middle School (Elgin's second middle school), set to open in 2027.
The bond also enabled meaningful facility improvements in both Athletics and Career and Technical Education, including the construction of The Homestead, an innovative culinary arts facility, and the Studio E broadcasting press box facility opening in fall 2026 — expanding real-world learning opportunities for students in exciting and forward-thinking ways. Carrying out the project construction from the 2021 bond package has provided the opening of two new elementary campuses, significant additions to Elgin High School, and numerous facility improvements that will enhance learning and safety for generations to come. Since joining Elgin ISD in 2022, the district has grown by approximately 1200 students.
Under her leadership, Elgin ISD teachers were recognized through the Texas Teacher Incentive
Allotment designation, generating over one million dollars in funding for teacher incentive pay and affirming EISD's commitment to attracting and retaining the exceptional educators its students deserve. Additionally, Elgin ISD was named a Capturing Kids' Hearts National Showcase District — a distinction that speaks to the culture of connection, belonging, and purpose.
About Dr. Jana Rueter
Dr. Rueter has served Elgin ISD as its Superintendent of Schools in Elgin ISD since July 1, 2022. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Rueter served as Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning in San Angelo ISD and Executive Director in Georgetown ISD. Her vast experience includes periods as a school principal and assistant principal, as well as a classroom teacher.
A Texas native, Dr. Rueter grew up in San Angelo, Texas. She received her undergraduate degree in education from Texas Tech University and completed a masters of educational administration at Texas A&M University. Dr. Rueter received her doctorate from The University of Texas in the Cooperative Superintendency Program.
Tras cuatro años de servicio a la comunidad del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Elgin y 34 años en la educación pública, la Dra. Jana Rueter ha anunciado su jubilación como Superintendente de Escuelas, con vigencia a partir del 31 de diciembre de 2026. Su último día como Superintendente será el 30 de junio de 2026. A partir de esa fecha, asumirá el cargo de Superintendente Emérita hasta su fecha de jubilación el 31 de diciembre de 2026.

Acerca de la Dra. Jana Rueter
La Dra. Rueter ha servido como Superintendente de Escuelas de Elgin ISD desde el 1 de julio de 2022. Antes de este nombramiento, se desempeñó como Superintendente Asistente de Enseñanza y Aprendizaje en San Angelo ISD y como Directora Ejecutiva en Georgetown ISD. Su amplia trayectoria incluye experiencia como directora y subdirectora de escuela, así como maestra en el salón de clases.
Originaria de Texas, la Dra. Rueter creció en San Angelo. Obtuvo su licenciatura en educación de la Universidad Texas Tech y completó su maestría en administración educativa en la Universidad Texas A&M. La Dra. Rueter obtuvo su doctorado en la Universidad de Texas a través del Programa Cooperativo de Superintendencia.
