Mrs. Mare

By Mateya Wolters

Mrs. Boe is a Special Education teacher at Sargent Central and has a Bachelor's degree from MSUM majoring in Psychology and a Master's Degree from UND majoring in special education with an emphasis on autism spectrum disorders. We asked her if she likes teaching and she replied with "Yes, I love watching my students grow and learn new skills." Then we continued to ask her a few more questions such as how long have you been teaching at Sargent Central and she replied, “I taught high school one year before switching to elementary school. This is my third year teaching elementary special education in Sargent Central." She has a total of eight years of teaching. Then we asked her what some interesting facts were and she said, “I love to travel, read and I live in Oakes with my husband and own two dogs named Max and Maya."

This summer Megan Leigh Boe got married and is now Mrs. Mare (Mar-ay).

Mrs. Pratt

By LeiLani Ringer

This month for Faculty Focus, we interviewed Mrs. Pratt. Before coming to Sargent Central, she used to teach at a military base overseas. Mrs. Pratt has been a teacher at Sargent Central for about eight years. She started as a 6th-grade teacher in 2014. The next year Mrs. Pratt switched with the new teacher, Mrs. Jenna Anderson, to become the 5th-grade teacher. As the years went on, she had pretty good years. Then as our school was changing, she got moved to the high school end to become the 5th through 8th-grade math teacher. We asked her what she felt about becoming a middle school math teacher. She replied with “It was challenging at first because I have never taught higher than 6th-grade level math.” We also asked what her favorite thing about teaching was, “My favorite thing about teaching is having different ages of students throughout the day, and I especially love being able to see them grow academically and personally over the years. I also love that I get to spend my days surrounded by kids. They keep me young at heart, even though they think I’m so old.”

Mrs. Christianson

By Mya Swanson

Mrs. C, during all of her education years has been a Clam, a Hi-Liner, a Viking, an Oriole, a Cardinal, a Cadet, and a Bulldog. Her favorite part about her job is that she has most of her students from 5th to 8th grade, and a few from 9th to 10th grades. She gets to watch them grow, mature, and learn. She says she is, “lucky to have the best students here at SC." She has been teaching for 32 years and has taught every grade from 5th to 12th English, Spanish 1, 2, and 3, Applied communications, Fiction, Novels, and Reading. She also taught at Lidgerwood and Streeter-Gackle schools. Two facts about her, “If you don’t find me fishing, you will find me reading.” She has two sons and two (soon) granddaughters.

Mr. Koppang

By Cheyenne Treat

Mr. Koppang has been teaching at Sargent Central for six years and he is the PE teacher. He said that the kids' favorite games to play are Mat Ball, Clean up Your Backyard, British Bulldog, Ghostbusters, and Busy Bees. Mr. Koppang also explains that if he were not a teacher, he would still be working with sports, such as a coach, athletic director, or working with the school. While teaching here at Sargent Central, his favorite memory was meeting his wife who was also a first-year teacher when he started. He wanted to become a teacher because he really enjoyed having his high school PE teacher and football coach, Mr. V.

The 57 Bus

By Nevaeh Keller

A few new books have been added to Sargent Central's library and this includes a nonfiction book, The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater.

“One teenager in a skirt. One teenager with a lighter. One moment that changes both of their lives forever. If it weren’t for the 57 bus, Sasha and Richard never would have met. Both were high school students from Oakland, California, one of the most diverse cities in the country, but they inhabited different worlds. Sasha, a white teen, lived in the middle-class foothills and attended a small private school. Richard, a black teen, lived in the crime-plagued flatlands and attended a large public one. Each day, their paths overlapped for a mere eight minutes. But one afternoon on the bus ride home from school, a single reckless act left Sasha severely burned, and Richard charged with two hate crimes and facing life in imprisonment. The case garnered national attention, thrusting both teenagers into the spotlight.”

Dashka Slater’s The 57 Bus begins as Richard, a sixteen-year-old African American boy from Oakland High School, and Sasha, a genderqueer senior from a private school in Berkley, board the number 57 bus in Oakland, California. Sasha is agender, which means that they do not identify as either female or male and to them, clothes don’t have a gender. Sasha’s skirt captures the attention of Richard and his friends. Richard holds a cigarette lighter to Sasha’s skirt as a prank and sets the fabric on fire. This leaves Sasha in a burn ward in the hospital and months of recovery ahead of them. As a result of this prank, Richard makes international news and he’s charged with two hate crimes and faces life imprisonment.

Seven plays were performed, beginning as early as eight in the morning until about three in the afternoon, as well as a lunch break where the students of Sargent Central went to Pizza Ranch. David Bergeman and Trent Nelson paid for lunch, so we owe them the biggest thank you imaginable.

The End of Bulldog Volleyball Season

By Abigail Erickson

To continue into regionals, the Bulldogs won against Enderlin in three sets! We wrapped up our season with a loss to Central Cass on November 5. It was a well-played game, but the little mistakes were what killed us the most; however, it was one of the toughest fought games of the year. It was a hard goodbye to our seniors, but the rest of us are ready for club volleyball to start in the spring and for league this summer!

FCCLA

By Gabi Christianson

Gabi Christianson attended District 5 Rally in Jamestown, ND on Wednesday, October 27th. Other students there were from Cooperstown, Wimbledon, Valley City, Lisbon, Milnor, Gwinner, Forman, Oakes, Ellendale, Lamoure, Edgeley, Wishek, Napoleon, Linton, and Steele. Sheyenne Waletzko, our District 5 President, called the meeting to order. The new presidential candidates were introduced and asked questions that related to FCCLA. The voting delegates from each chapter selected Cara Waletzko to be our new District 5 President.

Other activities that the students could do were tying blankets for the Linus Project, making greeting cards for each chapter, Kahoot, and FCCLA Olympics. Installation was held and Gabi was installed as the District 5 Vice President of Public Relations.

Our next activity will be the Star Events Competition in February. Getting a high score or “gold” there determines who will attend FCCLA State Convention in Bismarck in April.

Film Dudes

By Alana Anderson, LeiLani Ringer and Nevaeh Keller

The Film Dudes are a subsidiary of NDstrong that is focused on residency film programs at various academic levels. They travel to North Dakota schools throughout the year, make films with the students, and teach them about filmmaking and the process. Film Dudes is run by two men, Matthew Maldonando and Eric Thoemke. They came to Sargent Central last year and filmed the parody Paula Blart: Hall Cop. We had the privilege to welcome them back on Tuesday, November 16th-18th and November 22-23.

The first three days were spent coming up with the idea for the trailer and filming, which finished a bit earlier than anticipated. The following Monday and Tuesday were spent spent making mini- films with each high school class throughout the two days. This year the trailer was a parody of The Hunger Games.

What are a few things you look forward to when coming to school?

"My favorite part of coming to school is seeing friends, and learning different things. When I have sports that is always a good opportunity to see friends. My favorite class definitely would be science and child development. I just really understand science and enjoy it. Child development is a very good well-being class." - Gabi Christianson
"A few things I look forward to when coming to school is seeing new people and learning new things. My favorite subject in high school is Art and I love to cook, but I don't like working with people. One of my favorite seasons is fall and winter because I love hot chocolate and fireplaces. Some of my favorite things to cook are cookies, especially chocolate chip cookies. I also like Christmas break because you get to spend time with family and bake and watch Hallmark."- Mateya Wolters
zoom_out_map

What is your favorite memory while being in sports?

"My favorite memory was this year in football at E-E-K. It was a game that we were expecting to win easily but that was not the case. The game was close and two of the next three defensive possessions for us ended in a strip-sack by me. We ended up winning by twenty plus and I was awarded one of the players of the game by Coach Olson. There is no better feeling than helping my team win." - Josh Wittich
"I was playing football in 3rd grade. It was in Britton. They called a "Jet Sweep" and it was to me. I got the ball. After that I ran it for twenty-five yards. It was a great time." - Carter Hosford
zoom_out_map

What career do you see yourself going into after college?

"I see myself going into farming. After high school I plan on getting a diesel mechanic degree or going into the military, then go back to farming. I plan on going into diesel, so we don't need to send off our equipment to the dealer. I plan on going to NDSCS and maybe get an offer from John Deere, so I don't have to pay for college." - Athan Zirnhelt
"I'm not sure what I want to be yet but maybe a farmer. I might also pick engineering instead though. I just enjoy doing math and engineering takes math. I also enjoy farming, at least what I've done so far." - Payton Bergh
zoom_out_map
"I haven't fully decided on what I want to do for a career. I've thought about things I like to do and the career activities in career class. I was considering maybe becoming a pharmacist or a teacher. But whatever I choose, I know it will be the right job for me" -Emmett Bergeman
zoom_out_map

What is your favorite sport and subject?

"My favorite sport is volleyball. I love playing volleyball because it's a team sport and everything has to work in order to "finish". My favorite subject is World History. I like history because it is a fun active class and we also do a bunch of projects. I also like history class because we learn a bunch of cool stuff about our history." - Alana Anderson
"My favorite sports memory is definitely my first time playing varsity basketball. I was just an 8th grader and it was an amazing experience. All of the girls were so nice and supportive. It was a lot of fun practicing with the varsity players. I had tons of fun and learned lots of new skills."- Mya Swanson

Class Activities Class Activities

Seniors

By Nevaeh Keller and Cheyenne Treat

In Applied Communications this month, the Seniors were yet again challenged with a demonstration speech. The speeches had to be at least five to ten minutes long and they did not receive notecards or even a script. The intention of those speeches was to teach their fellow classmates how to do these activities. Some topics included: golf positions, stances, and clubs, how to use chopsticks, how to play the guitar, etc.

In POD, the Seniors chose from several topics that all had one common theme: voting. They learned about the voting process and how much money goes into the elections each year from big spenders. After learning this, they were tasked to develop a speech that was three to five minutes long. Some topics included: should candidates disclose their donors, should donations be illegal, should presidents have more requirements to be elected, etc.

Mass Media

By Gabi Christianson

A big part of our Mass Media class is doing the school newsletter. However, we also study about the media in our society. Lately, we have been studying the media of newspapers and magazines. Some of the topics in newspapers and magazines that we have been learning about are: 1. The anatomy of a newspaper, 2. the forms of magazines, 3. who reads what, and 4. The first amendment. In addition to these topics, we have also studied 1. scandals, 2. the Op-Ed page, 3. headlines, 4. supermarket tabloids, and 5. paparazzi. In the future we will begin studying the media of Internet.

9th Grade

By Nate Lyon

In Physical Science, the freshmen reviewed what they had learned in their most recent chapter by playing a game called Trashketball. In Trashketball, two students on opposite teams race to answer a question from their study guide the fastest. The faster one to write their answer down on a whiteboard gets to throw a ball into a trash can to try and score points for their team.

This last month in FCS class, the freshmen made and painted sculptures based on an artist’s art style.

Chris In The Classroom

By Nate Lyon

On November 16, Chris “Shoof” Scheufele came to Sargent Central to talk to students about ways to deal with bullying. With over a decade of teaching experience, Shoof understands why kids pick on each other and informs students around the country on how to deal with bullying. He also conveyed a sensitive topic, bullying, in the form of comedy, making students pay attention to what he has to say. Hopefully, Sargent Central can have Shoof back another time.
