LARGO NEWS
Back to School Night - September 10th
Join us for our Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, September 10! The evening will begin with our Back-to-School Activity and Program Fair, featuring vendor stations where families can learn more about school programs, resources, and community partners. At 6:30 p.m., we will convene for the main session, followed by classroom visits until 8:30 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet teachers, explore available programs, and strengthen our school-home partnership. We look forward to seeing you there and working together to make this school year a success!
Superintendent & County Executive Visit Largo for Opening Day
On Tuesday, August 26, County Executive Aisha Braveboy and PGCPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Shawn Joseph visited Largo High School to help celebrate the opening of the school year, our recent achievements—an increase in the graduation rate and a reduction in chronic absenteeism by more than 11%.
County Executive Braveboy, an alumna of Largo, has long pledged pride and support for our school community. This visit further deepened our partnership with her office. We were also joined by student leadership, members of the PTSCO, and community partners who helped highlight the strength of our Largo family.
Thank you to everyone for ensuring this visit was a success and for continuing to move our school forward with pride. We will continue to receive these opportunities, and we must remain ready when they come.
Clear Bookbag Mandate & Update
We want to sincerely thank you for your tremendous support with our clear book bag initiative. We are proud to share that 99% of our students are in compliance, and over 300 clear book bags have already been provided to students in need. We are continuing to work with our community partners to rebuild our supply and ensure that all students have the resources they need. Your partnership is essential to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment, and we truly appreciate your commitment to supporting this effort. Together, we are creating a safer school community, and we look forward to your continued support as we move forward.
As a reminder, PGCPS students at the secondary level in all Prince George's County Public Schools will be required to have clear book bags only. There will be no exceptions made under any circumstances. This communication has been shared widely with families beginning with last school year. Additionally, it was posted in the welcome back letter from August 1. Please ensure that your child comes to school with a clear book bag. Grade level administrators will reach out to you if there are issues with your child's book bag being out of compliance.
Special Education Family Night
You are invited to join us for our Special Education Family Night, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet our IEP Facilitator, Autism Lead Teacher, and case managers, and learn more about the exciting plans our team has for supporting special education this school year. This event is a great chance to connect, ask questions, and gain valuable information about the resources and services available to our students. We hope you can join us as we work together to celebrate and plan for a successful year!

Reinforcing the School Start Time
This is a friendly reminder that our school day and instruction begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. Arriving on time is critical to student success, as late arrivals result in missed instructional minutes that add up significantly over time. For example, a student arriving just 10 minutes late each day loses nearly 30 hours of instruction over the course of the school year. Consistent, on-time attendance ensures students are fully engaged from the start of the day, setting a strong tone for learning and achievement. We appreciate your continued partnership in helping your child arrive on time every day so they can take full advantage of the educational opportunities at Largo.
La Casa Celebration
Car Drop Offs in the Mornings
We kindly remind you to ensure that students are dropped off in a timely manner each morning to help us maintain a smooth and efficient arrival process. Car riders should remain on the left side for drop-off, while buses and access vehicles will continue to use the right side. Please do not drop students off at the back of the line, as this creates significant delays that extend all the way to Landover Road. We appreciate the improvements we’ve seen over time and look forward to continuing to enhance this process each day with your support and cooperation.
Lunch is Free for All Students
We are excited to share that lunch is free for all students at Largo High School for the entire school year, due to Largo being now a part of the Community Eligibility Provision Program! We encourage every student to take advantage of this opportunity and enjoy a healthy, balanced meal each day. Proper nutrition plays a key role in supporting student focus, energy, and overall academic success, and we want to ensure that every Largo Lion is fueled and ready to learn. Thank you for encouraging your child to make the most of this benefit!

Talent Ready
We are excited to share that the TalentReady Program is off to a fantastic start this school year! Currently, we have approximately 60 students enrolled in Information Technology-focused college courses through our program. We are especially thrilled to welcome our new 9th-grade cohort, who have officially begun their INT-1010 course at Prince George’s Community College.
As part of our ongoing commitment to student success, parents/guardians will receive weekly updates on assignments, progress, and behavior from your student’s assigned TalentReady Facilitator—either Mr. Buma or Mr. James. We encourage all parents to stay informed and engaged by reviewing these updates and regularly discussing assignment deadlines and progress with your student.
We would also like to address a concern regarding Cohort 2028 (10th grade): There have been recent incidents involving the use of inappropriate language and slurs during Zoom sessions with college professors. These behaviors are unacceptable and violate our program’s code of conduct. Mr. James has contacted the parents of the students involved and scheduled Parent-Teacher Conferences to address these matters directly.
Please be advised: Continued inappropriate behavior may result in removal from the TalentReady Program. We ask that you speak with your student about the importance of professionalism and respectful communication, particularly in virtual college classes. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly at tomisha.king@pgcps.org.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
