What's Happening This Week:

Dear Boulevard Families,

We had another wonderful week of teaching, learning, and celebrating student success at Boulevard! Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Our students continue to demonstrate perseverance, collaboration, and growth each day as we work together to become 1% better every day.

Classroom Highlights

2nd Grade – Phonics & Word Mapping

Second grade students participated in a 95% Phonics lesson focused on phoneme-grapheme correspondence, sound patterns, and word mapping. Students used sound cards, finger stretching, and sound boxes to identify and represent sounds in words. They practiced identifying sound-spelling patterns, decoding words, and mapping phonemes using words such as black, hatch, lodge, sage, ridge, and quick.

State Standard:
RF.2.3 – Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Parent Tip:
When reading at home, encourage your child to “stretch” sounds in unfamiliar words and tap each sound on their fingers. This helps strengthen decoding and spelling skills.

3rd Grade – Small Group Reading Discussions

Third grade students participated in small-group reading discussions using the fairy tale Clever Jack Takes the Cake. Student reading leaders selected their own groups, and students took turns reading by paragraph. Students then responded to an opinion-based prompt about whether the main character was successful in giving the princess a gift, using text evidence to support their thinking.

State Standard:
RL.3.1 – Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for answers.

Parent Tip:
After reading together at home, ask your child questions such as, “What evidence from the story supports your thinking?” Encouraging students to explain their answers builds comprehension and critical thinking skills.

5th Grade – Reading Comprehension & Text Evidence

Fifth grade students independently answered comprehension questions from Chapters 2 and 3 of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Students used evidence from the text to support their responses and revisited portions of the text to clarify their understanding.

State Standard:
RL.5.1 – Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Parent Tip:
Encourage your child to go back into the text when answering questions. Strong readers reread important sections to confirm understanding and support their thinking with evidence.

Kindergarten – Cleveland Zoo Field Trip

Our kindergarten students enjoyed an exciting field trip to the Cleveland Zoo where they learned interesting facts about animals and their habitats. It was wonderful seeing students make real-world connections to their classroom learning while exploring and observing animals throughout the zoo.

State Standard:
K.LS.1 – Living things have specific characteristics and basic needs.

Parent Tip:
Talk with your child about animals they observed and discuss what habitats animals need to survive. Simple conversations help strengthen vocabulary and science understanding.

Fine Arts Celebrations

Thank you to all of the families who attended our recorder, band, orchestra, and vocal concerts this week. Our students were absolutely amazing! We have such talented students at Boulevard, and their collaboration and practice were key to their success.

A special thank you to Mrs. Costanzo, Mr. Baker, Ms. Sisto, and Mrs. Gray for your dedication and commitment to our students and music programs. Mrs. Gray, we will miss you so much and wish you the very best in your retirement!

Thank you again for your continued support of Boulevard Elementary. We are looking forward to another productive week ahead!

With appreciation,

Principal Mahoney-Curry

¡Esperamos tener otra semana productiva!

Con agradecimiento,
Escuela Primaria Mahoney-Curry

Attendance Matters

Coming to school regularly helps students feel connected and confident.

Every day of school counts. When students attend school regularly, they build strong routines, stay connected to learning, and make steady academic progress. Our goal is to reach a 95% weekly attendance rate in every grade level, K–5, and we can only do this with strong family partnerships.

By ensuring students arrive at school on time and every day, families play a key role in reducing chronic absenteeism and supporting student success. Let’s work together to help every student be present, engaged, and ready to learn—because every minute counts at Boulevard.
