McFarland School District
November 2025 Community Newsletter
Message from the Superintendent
Welcome to the May 2026 McFarland School Community Newsletter!
This time of year brings a natural blend of celebration, reflection, and forward planning across our schools. Our buildings are full of energy, from end of year performances and culminating projects to postseason athletic competitions and milestone events like senior exit interviews, the senior parade, and graduation. It truly is a great time to be a Spartan. At the same time, we are already preparing for a strong start to the 2026–27 school year, grounded in our continued focus on meeting the needs of every learner, every day.
📊 Student Learning & Assessments
Spring marked the completion of statewide assessments, including the Wisconsin Forward Exam and the ACT. We are proud of the focus, effort, and perseverance our students and staff demonstrated throughout the testing season.
🏆 Athletics & Activities Highlights
Our students continue to shine beyond the classroom. Winter/Early Spring state level participation included Boys Basketball, Boys Swimming, Wrestling, Dance, DECA, Solo & Ensemble, and participants in the Visual Arts Classic Competition. These accomplishments reflect dedication, teamwork, and pride in our schools. Congratulations to the students involved, along with the outstanding coaches and advisors who support them.
✨ End of Year Celebrations
From performances to graduation, our schools are filled with meaningful opportunities to celebrate student growth, talent, and achievement. We look forward to honoring the Class of 2026 and all they have accomplished.

School Funding, Explained
Ever wonder how school funding actually works, and why so many districts across Wisconsin, including McFarland, are feeling the strain?
We know it can be confusing. That’s why we’ve included a short, four minute video in this newsletter that breaks it down in a clear and easy to understand way. It highlights how schools are funded and why the current system is creating real challenges for districts like ours.

💡 Here’s what we want you to know:
We are committed to being responsible with every dollar. Our team is actively working to reduce expenses and identify new revenue opportunities, all while protecting the quality of education our students receive. We understand that taxes are high, and we take seriously the need to tighten our belt wherever possible.
📊 What are we doing about it?
Through budget management and development of the 2025-2026 Fiscal Year, the McFarland School District Administration and School Board reduced the structural deficit by over $600,000 with expense reductions and revenue increases not related to property taxes. Below are the key items that helped us manage this year's Fiscal Year..
Expense Reductions & Controls
Paused hiring of DEIB vacancy
Reductions in outdoor education and summer contracts
Staff overload reductions and consolidations
Negotiated long term health insurance plan with caps
Negotiated 2 year dental insurance plan with small increases
Revenue Generation & Efficiency
Investment management
Increased enrollment with Virtual Schools
Reduced energy consumption
Grants

Solar Farm Facility!
On the sunny 2026 Earth Day, the Village of McFarland celebrated the opening of a new solar farm with a ribbon cutting ceremony! Public officials and project staff offered remarks about the project and its importance. Following remarks, members of the McFarland High School Eco Club cut the ribbon on the new facility.
The facility is located on an eight-acre parcel of land owned by the Village, which is leased to the McFarland School District, which in turn is subleased to Alliant Energy under their Customer Hosted Renewables program. Under this unique partnership, the Village of McFarland and McFarland School District both receive monthly rent payments from Alliant Energy in addition to receiving renewal energy credits generated from the solar facility to meet Village and District sustainability goals. The facility includes approximately 3,100 solar panels, which can power around 225 homes annually.
Thank you to all who attended and to everyone who had a hand in making this project become a reality. Happy Earth Day!

District Highlights
Jamie Thomas - 2026 Wisconsin Middle School Principal of the Year!
We’re thrilled to celebrate Jamie Thomas, principal of Indian Mound Middle School, for being named the 2026 Wisconsin Middle School Principal of the Year by the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators!
Thanks to her leadership, IMMS has become one of the top-performing middle schools in Dane County - while working to build a culture rooted in belonging, support, and high expectations for every student.
We couldn’t be prouder of this incredible achievement and the lasting impact that Jamie continues to make across the McFarland School District community.
Learning in Action!
Third graders in Mrs. McKernan’s class at WIS had a blast building quadrilaterals and other polygons using popsicle sticks! As they created, they explored each shape’s attributes and compared them to one another, bringing math concepts to life in a creative way.
They even stretched their thinking to take on the challenge of building a hectoheptagon - wow!
Learning + creativity = a winning combination! #McFarlandStrong
MHS Presented Shrek the Musica!
Congratulations to our MHS performers, staff, and crew on a successful run of Shrek the Musical!
