WHAT WE ARE LEARNING IN WIT AND WISDOM

We are starting Module 2 of Wit and Wisdom, entitled The American West. In this module we will discuss pioneers, legends, and the history of the American West.

Essential Question: Focused on legends versus historical reality of the frontier, pioneers, and indigenous peoples.

Core Texts:

  • Johnny Appleseed by Stephen Kellogg
  • The Story of Johnny Appleseed by Aliki
  • Journey of a Pioneer by Patricia J. Murphy
  • Plains Indians by Andrew Santella
  • The Buffalo Are Back by Jean Craighead George
  • The Legend of the Bluebonnet by Tomie dePaola
  • John Henry (versions by Julius Lester and Ezra Jack Keats).

This week students will:

  • View a slideshow of images entitled “Moving West: The Oregon Trail."
  • Learn key vocabulary that will be used during Module 2, including pioneer, settler, plains, and prairie.
  • Read and discuss The Buffalo Are Back by Jean Craighead George

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING IN FUNDATIONS

This week we will cover Unit 6, Week 1 of "Fundations," our curriculum for language instruction and assessments. Unit 6 focuses on the vowel-consonant-e syllable. The first syllable is long and the e is silent. This includes words like cape, home, and pine.

This week, students will practice:

  • reading and spelling vowel-consonant-e syllables.
  • the two sounds that "s" can make (/s/ and /z/)
  • the "spelling option procedure."
  • two-syllable words with closed and vowel-consonant-e syllables, like invite, baseball and reptile.
  • high-frequency irregular "trick" words, including words like only, house, move, right and place.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION IMPORTANT INFORMATION

We are a team! You MUST be involved for your child to have a strong year:

Regular attendance is critical to success in school. Your child must come to school every school day unless they have a fever. School attendance is not optional. Students should arrive at school on time.

Read with your child every night. Split the time so that both adult and student have time to read to the other. Books that the student reads should be on-level. Books read by the adult can be on any reading level, but should be interesting to the student. Adults should point to the words as they read. Please support your child on their journey in reading! If you need books for home, we can help!

Your student should have a regular, early bedtime. Seven and eight-year-olds need much more sleep than adults- between 9-11 hours of sleep each night! A well-rested student has a much easier time being attentive and learning.

Limit your child’s screen time at home. Phones, TVs and tablets train children to crave constant stimulation, which makes learning at school a challenge. Decide how many minutes your child views screens, then encourage them to find other ways to fill their days, including playing and reading.

Important Dates:

Thanksgiving Break will be November 23-27.

The Winter Break will be December 21-January 1

Homework goes home Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Grades will be posted weekly in PowerSchool. Please check your child's grades on a regular basis.
