Please Remind your Student of Schoolwide and Classroom Expectations

Now that we have entered the third marking period, rules and expectations for students have been reviewed and reinforced many times. MIR's will be given for failure to follow these rules and expectations.

  • Students are not allowed to have gum in school (unless it is a "gum day")
  • Students are not permitted to eat snacks/food during the instructional day unless it is during breakfast or at lunch in the cafeteria
  • Students should keep their hands to themselves at all times
  • Students should use kind words with peers and adults (no inappropriate language)
  • Students should remain seated during lunch with their homeroom class only
  • Students are not permitted to use their cell phones during the school day
  • Students should make sure they are on assigned websites at all times while using their Chromebooks
  • Students should not wear hoods or hats in the building.

Valentine's Day

Each homeroom will have a Valentine's Day card exchange on February 14th in the afternoon. Students will have a chance to decorate Valentine's bags during class. We are so excited to spread some kindness and cheer throughout the 5th grade! Please see the information in your child's homeroom letter below. We will also send home paper copies of the letter with your child!

From the desk of Mrs. Charles

It is hard to believe that half of the school year is already over. In just 5 short months, our 5th graders will be graduating and headed to Middle School. Therefore, these next few months are crucial in getting them academically and socially prepared for this upcoming journey.

In Shared Reading, we have recently begun our historical fiction text called Bud, Not Buddy. Throughout this text, we will focus on fluency, narrative elements, character development, synthesizing details and events, and focus on using the text to support our answers during class discussions and assignments. We will also be engaging in 2 nonfiction texts called How does a Waterfall become Electricity? and Ice to Steam. We will continue to use nonfiction text features to help us understand the information we read. We are also watching some interesting videos in order to visualize how a hydroelectric powerplant works.

In ELA, we have begun the historical fictional text Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky. The students will use the events and information presented in this text and compare it to an article about the Underground Railroad. They will then complete a compare and contrast essay using these two resources. Our second read-aloud is A Single Shard. These two books will be read aloud to the students. During this time, listening comprehension is formatively assessed.

As we get closer to the end of the marking period, we will be working together to complete sample MCAP tests to prepare for the real assessment in April.

Throughout our ELA and Writing lessons, we use many graphic organizers to organize our thoughts and the information we learn. This is also part of our AVID initiative at Thomson. We want to expose students to the many tools they can use to be more successful in school.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at mmcharles@ccps.org or call the school. Thank you again for your support.

RACE Strategy for Response to Text

Spelling Homework

Students will be expected to complete 1 spelling activity from the choice board that is glued in their spelling journal. Homework is assigned Monday - Thursday. Spelling should take no more than 15-20 minutes, depending on the activity your child chooses. If there is no homework for that day or week, students will write "none" in their planner.

From Miss. Dickerson's Science Lab

As we enter marking period 3 students are SUPER excited to begin our last two Science units for 5th grade!.

Unit 3 - Structures and Properties of Matter - Students begin learning basic chemistry concepts, including what is matter, the phases of matter and how physical and chemical changes impact matter. Students will investigate simple chemical reactions. Students will be learning about cells, cell organelles, cell structure and function, and the levels of cell organization (single cell to multicellular organisms). The concepts of photosynthesis are developed during this time period along with introducing the students in the proper way to use a compound microscope.

Unit 4 - Space Systems - Students are introduced to the organization of space and how the celestial bodies (stars, moons, planets) impact life on earth. Students study the properties of earth (gravity, atmosphere, seasons) which allows for life on earth. These concepts are continued in more detail when the students enter middle school, grade 6 Earth/Space science.

Parents can visit MISA Practice Tests to familiarize themselves with state assessments.

Math Updates from Mrs. Wiggins

Hi 5th grade families! Students have learned so much over the 1st and 2nd marking periods. I cannot believe it is already the third marking period!!

Our math block consists of a 30-minute whole group lesson followed by 60 minutes of flex group rotations. Our flex group rotations include reteaching and practice of new skills as well as small group intervention support on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

We ended marking period two with Topic 7 - Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators. I am so proud of all 5th grade for their hard work! Marking period three kicks off with Topic 8, which focuses on multiplying fractions. Below are the other topics that will be covered in marking period three:

Topic 9 - Dividing Fractions

Topic 10 - Represent and Interpret Data

Topic 11 - Volume Concepts

Your child should have brought home their Volume One math book as well as their math journal from marking periods one and two. Ask your child to show you the "Math Magic" we learn about each day! I love seeing their confidence build as they learn new skills and strategies for how to solve problems they once perceived as difficult!

Please keep practicing those multiplication facts at home! I have included a multiplication chart for reference below. I have also included the "Home-School Connection" for each Topic.

*Please let me know if you are in need of any materials or extra practice for home use!

Math Homework

Students will receive math homework approximately three times per week. I ask that students put a star next to any problem they may have had difficulty with so that I can address it the next day. I want them to try their best, but I never want them to become frustrated or upset if they do not understand. Sometimes, math homework will be a worksheet that reviews basic skills, such as multiplication facts. In their planner, you will see "math worksheet" or "page ***" indicating what they should be working on that night. If there is no homework for math, you will see "None".

Updates from Mrs. Folk

Wow, third marking period already! I will be continuing to support students this marking period in ELA and Science. I will also be providing some students with Tier 3 Reading Interventions during their DI block. Students are continuing to complete their iReady Diagnostic Assessments in Math and Reading, giving us more data as we make individualized plans for the upcoming year. Many students are achieving their annual goals and will be getting a chance to ring the bell to celebrate their accomplishments.

Please continue to talk to your student about their interests for the future and what kind of learning strategies they are using that help them demonstrate their best work. In the Spring, we will begin working on our introduction slide shows for middle school.

Miss Pieretti, my student intern from the University of Delaware, will be returning soon and is looking forward to seeing all of the students again!
