Art

Students are starting off the year with our portrait drawing lesson! Using old cosmetology mannequin heads as models, students first draw a “before” drawing, which captures their abilities as of right now. Then, we learn some basic facial proportion/alignment tips as well as tips on shading hair and skin. After learning and practicing, students draw the mannequin head one last time for their “after” drawing. The goal is to see and show the growth that took place over the course of the two drawings! It’s always fun to see everyone's drawings & students get a kick out of it. After this lesson, we will work with a variety of materials! Drawing, painting, sculpting…it’s all on deck! Looking forward to a great year!

Band

This nine weeks in band, we are focused on developing routine and structure within our full ensemble rehearsal setting. Students have begun to learn their new warm-up routine, as well as reading new band repertoire. We will use this music to develop our fundamental ensemble skills

Choir

The first nine weeks of choir focus on developing routines while also exploring many types of music around the world. Students learn many rounds, and we develop the ability to sing in two parts at once. In addition to this, students learn about the voice, how to warm it up, and how to expand the instrument. Lastly, students will work on music theory skills that translate to being able to read written music notation.

Engineering

This quarter, 7th grade engineering students will be exploring the following topics and projects:

  • We begin the year with spaghetti tower builds, where students learn about iterative processes, engineering trade-offs, and structural integrity. There is a reflection assignment to conclude this project.
  • Our next project involves building with K’Nex and creating instructional packets to recreate our designs. This emphasizes the importance of good written communication skills and informative sketching. There is a reflection assignment to conclude this project.
  • We will then complete a unit learning about a dozen different types of engineers. Students will pick two they are the most interested in to learn more about. This unit will conclude with an assessment.
  • After that unit, we do another K’nex project, this time building towers… on a budget! Students learn about the importance of a Bill of Materials and earning profit, as well as highlighting the vital importance of defining your problem. There is a reflection assignment to conclude this project.
  • Next, we will dive into our second tested unit: the design process. Students will learn a step-by-step method to create sound designs. This unit also ends with an assessment.
  • Finally, to end this half of the class, we will apply what we’ve learned to an egg drop projects, where we’ll learn lots of new physics concepts about things like gravity, acceleration, force, potential & kinetic energy, mass, and velocity. There is a reflection assignment to conclude this project.

PE and Wellness

In PE, we have many fun activities for students this quarter! This year, we will start Mondays with Fitness Monday, where the students will participate in team-building fitness-based activities. Tuesday will be in the Library with Wellness Tuesday. Wednesdays and Thursdays will be sport-centered days - we start with small fun games, team handball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, students will create their own games, then we will finish the quarter with stretching/”yoga”. Fridays will be "Friday Fun Day” and we will play fun games. In wellness, we will be learning about goal setting, personal hygiene, and the importance of physical activity.

Technology

In technology, students are currently working through a Photoshop-esque program in order to learn professional image modification techniques. This month, they’ll also be learning about how to use presentation software to focus on the aesthetics of presenting as opposed to the content specifically, and do some light audio editing to create a podcast about digital citizenship.

Discovery and Design

Discovery and Design started this year off with learning about the Engineering Design Process. We were able to practice a basic understanding of the process through our first lab- Paper Airplanes! Students learned how to create a question, research/brainstorm, and make changes to their design based on their data. As we head into the rest of the quarter, we will continue creating with the design process, experimenting with science principles and learning about careers within the STEM field.

ELA

Mrs. Huber's, Mrs. Danner's, and Mrs. Kline's Classes:

In ELA 7, we are beginning the year focusing on learning about durable skills as a learner such as learning preferences, email etiquette, and resume writing. Then, we will be diving into our Realistic Fiction unit with our read-aloud Ghost by Jason Reynolds. Students will also begin their first independent reading fiction novels. We encourage families to talk about our reading texts at home and even check out our classroom Canvas class for the opportunity to listen to Ghost. We are excited to work through our first texts and even jump into Greek and Latin roots to expand our vocabulary. Please encourage your student to share new learning and read at home!

Once we complete our work with realistic fiction, we will venture into the world of classic literature with some poems and short stories by Edgar Allan Poe. By comparing our modern realistic fiction to Poe’s classic work, students will learn the importance of language to create mood and tone in any type of story. Also, by the end of this unit, students will understand that all literature has universal themes regardless of the genre or time period in which it is written.

Mrs. Heinig's Enriched ELA Classes:

During the first week of Mrs. Heinig’s Enriched ELA 7, we focused on building community and getting to know one another. We’ve discussed extensively the importance of respect and integrity as the foundation for life, much like reading and writing are the foundations for all school subjects. We’ve also worked in our class to establish habits of good readers and writers and improve our organizational skills as a foundation for continued learning. We’ve started the year with our Biography, Autobiography, and Memoir/Realistic Fiction Unit for reading and writing. We have chosen people who give us hope, help us find our way, and show us what real GRIT looks like. After we have read to be inspired by someone else's life, we will write our own memoirs. Please talk with your students about their book choices and encourage them to continue reading at home for at least 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Your kids will be finding independent RF novels of their own choosing. We will take a deep dive into characterization, plot analysis, and elements of story--learning to read it and write it. In addition, we are becoming Word Wizards who enjoy learning new words through Greek and Latin roots and figurative language. We will also begin to delve into Project-Based Learning methods that will launch us into a year of Wander and Wonder.

Math

Math 7

In 7th grade math, we are diving into our “Proportional Relationships” module. Students will learn what proportional relationships look like in tables, graphs, equations, etc. As of now, our module assessment will be on September 12. Later this quarter, we will also explore our “Solve Percent Problems” module with percent changes such as: sales tax, discounts, tip, commissions, and more. We end the quarter with module 3 on “Integer Operations.” These modules are critical for 7th grade and full of real-life connections.

Science

Mr. Whitt’s and Mr. Woolley’s seventh grade science classes are starting the year with ecology. In the next couple of weeks, students will be attempting to “Capture the Wild Bead” in a lab dealing with estimating populations. They will make a biome poster. They will also be using microscopes to discover an unseen world in a drop of pond water.

Social Studies

Mrs. Alecusan’s and Mrs. Brar’s social studies classes will be starting off the year with some review of important geography and economic topics. In September, we will move on to studying our first ancient civilization, the Ancient Greeks. This first true unit is full of hands-on activities that will have students out of their seats and engaging in the content. We are excited to “Gamify” Greece and build in a lot of collaborative and engaging activities in our competition. We’re looking forward to diving into the past!
