Student of the Week

Our class is awesome!!

To learn more about our classmates,

we are doing

"Student of the Week".

McKinley

Each day we will let the "student of the week" share a little bit about themselves.

On Fridays, the "student of the week" will have the opportunity to bring in a show-n-tell.

Something that is very special to them to show and talk about with the class.

Mrs. Austin and I are excited to celebrate each student in our classroom.

KEEP READING!! KEEP READING!!

Reading Homework - Please return the books in the plastic baggie!

Reading Homework

We only have 9 weeks left of school!! Wow!

For this last 9 weeks, your child will be bringing home a reader in a plastic baggie. They may be able to read or not read the words. The reader is being sent home to cover a range of skills we have been working on in the class. It is not just about reading the words, especially for those who are not quite ready to read. Please take a few moments to read with your child. This will help them build a solid reading foundation!!

Your child may read the book with any other reader (it does not have to be you).

Once they have read or been read to (and discussed) (3x for shorter books and 1x for longer books), please color the square on the new yellow reading log in your child's binder. Once I see that a new square has been colored, I will send home a new reader. I hope that each child will read at least 10 books by the end of Kindergarten.

List of some skills to focus on:

  • Following words left to right, top to bottom, page by page
  • Rhyming words
  • Digraphs - sh, ch, th, wh, ck, ng
  • Sight words
  • Ask and answer questions about words in the book
  • Retell the story
  • Tell the topic (what the book is about)
  • Tell the central idea (most important idea in the book)
  • Tell key details (information about the topic)
  • Spell words from the book
Mystery Reader

Mystery Reader

It's Mystery Reader time in our class! I hope that each student will have at least one special reader participate. If you don't see a day/time that works for you, please email. Students LOVE when older siblings come to read.

Spoonful of Sugar Behavior

Your child will be continually trying to earn 10 "spoonfuls of sugar" (tally marks) to add to their lemonade. You may have heard your child talking about "sweet" or "sour" behavior. We are always striving for "sweet" behavior. A coupon will come home in their folder/binder to let you know when they have earned all 10 spoonfuls! Once they earn 10 "spoonfuls of sugar", they can choose a reward coupon. Some examples of the reward coupons are as follows: sitting by a friend, using a pen, bubble gum, taking shoes off in the classroom, wear a hat from home for the day, bring a stuffed animal for the day, show and tell, treasure box, or earning bonus wow tickets. This goes along with our school PBIS plan, school hives, and school-wide bee theme.

When your child earns all 10, this is a big deal!! They have worked very hard for their reward!
