The Pulse of the Pride

December 6, 2024
Lyme School Friends,
It has been a great transition back into school after Thanksgiving!
Check out our new student pictured in a playground tree. Certainly a cool sighting this past week!
This time of year can be really tough for students with different transitions due to breaks so close together. It is important during school vacations to keep up your routines especially days before reentry to school. This makes coming back to school go as smoothly as possible.
We finally have some snow! Please remember that students should be prepared for any and all types of weather. We do our utmost best to get kids outside even when the temperature is quite cold. If your student is missing a jacket, gloves or whatever remember to check the lost and found. The best time to check the lost and found is right before school gets going in the morning or at the end of the day.
With the winter weather, it is also the time of year of delays and school cancellations. Before making any decision, we receive information and input from the national weather service, state emergency management, the Lyme highway department, our bus company, other districts, and other sources. We try to make this decision by 5:30 AM. Once a decision is made, we will send out a message through ALMA alerting you. We typically only do a two hour delay or a school closure due to the challenge of an early release. For two hour delays, the building will be open at 9:45 AM. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we make these decisions in the interest of student and staff safety. This is also a perfect time to check that your contact information is correct in ALMA to ensure you receive the notifications. While you're there, make sure you've completed all the required forms this year.
Parent/teacher conferences are underway and school will be closed on December 13th to set aside time for these meetings. You have heard from your child's classroom teacher or team directly or through their newsletter about signing-up. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions. Report Cards should be ready for you on December 12th and you will receive those via email from ALMA.
Please do not forget that school is closed December 20th through January 3rd. We will see students back on campus on January 6th.
Have a fabulous weekend! Enjoy the Pulse of the Pride! The next newsletter will hit your inbox on December 20th as we head into the winter break.
As always, please reach out if I can be of assistance.
Regards,
John P. D'Entremont, Principal

School Board Message
Dear Lyme Neighbors,
Thank you to so many members of our community who have already supported the Lyme School capital project! With your support, we have successfully met the generous match set by the Lyme Foundation and secured a total of $50,450 to fully cover the costs of upgrading siding on the upper stories of the Plain School. Stop by to see the progress taking place!
With this first milestone met, we’re continuing our fundraising efforts with the goal of raising $260,000, roughly 10% of the total project. As we embark on Phase 2 of this project, we continue to look to our community to support these health and safety improvements directly benefiting our children and teachers. We hope you’ll join us in making a gift today!
Every dollar raised helps lower the amount of the annual school budget needed to fund building-related expenses and decreases the overall project cost to taxpayers.
Please join us in supporting this important project by mailing your contribution to:
The Lyme School
Attn: Lyme School Project '24-'25
PO Box 117
Lyme, NH 03768
Checks can be made out to the Lyme School. Please include "Lyme School Project '24-'25" in the memo line. Be sure to include your name and mailing address so we may send you an acknowledgement and receipt.
Thank you!
Elizabeth Glenshaw, Kristin Roth & Stacey Summerfield
on behalf of the Lyme School
About the Project: the Lyme School is undertaking a major capital project which will improve the health, safety, and environment of the school for our children. With the support of Lyme voters, the school will remove lead on the Plain School exterior and asbestos in the Laura Barnes School. In addition, the project will include ADA-compliant bathrooms, heating and ventilation upgrades to ensure healthy air circulation, and safety enhancements.

Report Cards
You will be receiving report cards soon!
Our report cards focus on assessing students' mastery of specific academic standards or learning objectives. Our report card standards are aligned with approved national educational standards for each subject area. These standards outline the essential skills and knowledge students should acquire at each grade level, serving as clear benchmarks for academic success. Rather than receiving a single letter grade for a subject, your child's report card will provide detailed feedback on their performance in specific skill areas.
We feel a standards-based report card helps students, parents, and educators better understand the expectations for each subject at each grade level, fostering a sense of accountability and a shared commitment to academic success. The emphasis on specific learning objectives encourages a growth mindset, emphasizing progress and improvement over time.
Lyme School students are rated on each standard using a four category scale:
‘B’ - Below Standard - Student is performing below the expected standard.
‘M’ - Making Progress - Student is making progress on learning the standard.
‘M+’ - Meeting Standard - Student has mastered the standard.
‘E’ - Exceeding Standard - Student is exceeding mastery of the standard.
Aside from a rating on each standard, families will also see an overall rating as an average of all the standards. Teachers may also include a brief narrative describing how a student is fairing in a particular class. Specialists have included a comprehensive course description outlining topics and skills covered in a particular class.
Please reach out with questions.
Ms. Neuroth's Library & Media News
Many New Books are available in the Commons and at CFL
Students in grades K-3 are in the final weeks of reading books nominated for the Ladybug Picture book award, and they will be voting next week! Students in K-5 are wrapping up the year with a reflection on the best books they have read and sharing book recommendations. I will share these once they are finished.
Please help students remember to look for and return library books in a timely manner. Many students have overdue books at the moment. Students in grades 2-8 can log into their school library catalog account to see which books are checked out currently on their account.
If you are interested in a conference to discuss anything related to your child and the library or media resources, please contact me to schedule a time on December 13.
From CFL:
If there are any remaining Blisters for Books pledges outstanding, please send them into CFL. This year we have raised over $7,000. Thank you to all who contributed!
Our next after school movie is December 10: Inside Out 2

The Specials Spotlight
From the Music Room!
We had an exciting week of performances! On Wednesday our Kinder class performed The Carnival of the Animals, a musical story inspired by the composition by Camille Saint-Saëns! We had lions, donkeys, kangaroos, and more! Thank you to both our parent and student audience members! Stay tuned for a link to our recording of the performance!
Wednesday evening our 5th Grade Beginner Band and Lyme Middle School Band performed their solo and small ensemble concert! We showcased student speakers, small group, and solo performances in addition to our instrument family groups. We also had excellent audience attendance. Thank you to everyone who came out!
Lyme Lions Robotics Team Moves on to State Championship!
After months of hard work, the robotics team had great success at the First Lego League regional qualifier a few weeks ago in Lebanon. The team placed in the middle of the field on the robot table, but wowed the judges with their innovation project and took home the overall champions award.
After continued work iterating on their project and robot, they are heading down to Bedford High School tomorrow to represent the Lyme School against 50 other teams from around the state.
I'm very proud of their hard work and the dedication of the parent coaches, James Ricker and Vince Berk.
Go Lyme Lions!
December Art News
Well, it is my favorite time of the year. This week, Middle School students matched up with a Kindergarten friend, read a book together, and drew a monster buddy. Some of you might recognize this Lyme School tradition, which has been done off and on since 2014. This year is a little extra special, as many middle schoolers remember their big buddies from when THEY were in kindergarten. Yes, we have now cycled all the way through...it only took 10 years! There is another part to this tradition, but since we are trying to keep that part a surprise…that will have to wait for a future newsletter! I hope you can see the joy and excitement that this time together brings for both the big kids and the littles!
Lower School Spanish
Kindergarten and first grade Spanish classes have learned about making hot chocolate in Spanish and the important cultural tradition of hot chocolate in Mexico. They sang songs (like this one on Youtube, which all the kids loved!), practiced vocabulary, read books and then acted out our story. In the story a grandmother makes hot chocolate for her family- one big cup for the grandfather, a medium cup for herself, and a small cup for her granddaughter. The granddaughter tries them all, but one is too hot and one is too cold. Luckily, her own chocolate is just right!
Fitness for Life Elective
Trimester two has started off strong - literally, with the new PE elective of Fitness for Life. Students in this elective have committed to improving their physical fitness by taking part in a series of exercises that coincide with various components of fitness.
Each week, participants will complete a workout routine specifically intended to increase their ability to build their muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility. By taking personal responsibility for building their own fitness, this group of students have made the conscious choice to improve their health and overall wellbeing. It does not get better than that!
PE in the Intermediate Grades
As we returned from Thanksgiving break, students in grades three through five have begun a unit in floor hockey. This fast paced, team oriented sport activity allows for students to build and refine their low level striking skills, eye- hand coordination, and the ability to utilize their team Building skills as they execute passes, share responsibilities of playing different positions, and demonstrating their ability to be a cooperative group member.
Grade 7 Health
Students in grade seven have been working extensively on a body coherence project. This project involved students learning about and then researching the systems of the body. This small group project extended into students being asked to further research two body systems, describe them, discuss the importance of how the two systems work coherently, how nutrition plays a role in keeping those systems working in coherence, and how body coherence plays a role in overall health and wellness physically and mentally.
Students then presented their projects to their classmates in various formats, including slide shows, podcasts, and even songs, demonstrating their creativity and their knowledge of just how fascinating the human body works.
