Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! Let's make 2021 the best year yet! Do you have resources that others may benefit from? If so, share them on the Social Studies Google Classroom. In addition, continue to check the Google Classroom for news and updates related to our district's social studies initiatives. I appreciate all teachers who have joined, contributed, and communicated via the Social Studies Google Classrooms. Please continue to use the google classroom to seek answers to various content-based questions/concerns and gather and share content based resources.

Social Studies Digital Resource Tools

Attention all social studies teachers: If you know of a great digital resource that helps elevate your social studies lessons and should be added to the Digital Resource Tools List, please share that with phillip.sykes@cowetaschools.net or via your district social studies Google Classroom. Content Specialists are constantly looking for helpful "go-to" tools that will help increase 21st-century skills, created genuine engagement, and immerse students in opportunities that require critical thinking. To access the current list, please click the button below.

New to the List this Month: Goose Chase App

Goose Chase is a free app that allows teachers to develop scavenger hunts for students. Teachers create prompts that surround content and then assign teams to each class period. Students will automatically be assigned a team and will work together to complete the scavenger hunt. Students will use their smartphones, iPods, or other personal devices with camera access to participate and complete the scavenger hunt. If you are interested in receving a set of system retired smart phones, please contact Dr. White and we will get you a set.

Teaching the Inauguration

As we all know, this past election cycle has been widely controversial and stressful. As teachers, it is our responsibility to teach the facts that surround our nation's history, the constitution, and our democratic process. With that said, Inauguration is quickly approaching and we need to be ready to have fact based conversations with our students when questions arise or special current events can support a lesson. Check out this article on Teaching the Inauguration. I found some interesting perspectives and tips within.
Teaching the Inauguration

Teaching the Inauguration

Teaching Tolerance provides free resources to educators—teachers, administrators, counselors and other practitioners—who work with children from kindergarten through high school. Educators use our materials to supplement the curriculum, to inform their practices, and to create civil and inclusive school communities where children are respected, valued and welcome participants.

Newnan Coweta Historical Society Scholarship Program

For the third consecutive year, the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society (NCHS) will be awarding a $10,000 scholarship to a Coweta County student intending to pursue a college education with a history or history-related major or minor.

The Newnan-Coweta Historical Society is now beginning to take applications for its annual $10,000 scholarship awarded to a local student in good standing. The scholarship will be issued at a rate of $2,500 per year, paid in installments per semester or quarter depending on the institution’s’ system.

The NCHS scholarship is intended to promote the study of history and history-related fields. History helps us understand change, society, and community, and the study of it creates well-rounded, skillful citizens. This specific scholarship is an investment in the Newnan and Coweta community and its future and serves to promote the Historical Society’s goal of preserving and protecting local history.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be a Coweta County resident in their senior year of high school and in good standing to graduate. Students from public school, private school, home school, and virtual school are all eligible to apply. Applicants must intend to pursue history or a history-related field as an area of study. The mailing deadline for applications is February 28, 2020. Applications must include: a completed and signed application form, official transcripts and available aptitude test scores; letter of acceptance from college/university (if received); three letters of recommendation; and a one-page personal statement. A followup interview may be requested by the NCHS staff and Scholarship Committee.

For more information or questions concerning the application process, please call the NCHS offices at 770.251.0207 or email executivedirector@newnancowetahistoricalsociety.com
