ELA

This fall we will explore how everything in nature is connected through diving into studying the wolves of Yellowstone. We will discover what a keystone species is while we read about bees, beavers, wolves, and more! While we study this subject matter we will learn about the various text structures, how to identify a main idea (or gist), how to write a summary, and how to gather evidence and prove our thinking. Students will integrate both writing and grammar into our reading time, while also building vocabulary throughout our unit.

Math

We will begin our first math unit through deepening students' understanding of place value, building onto their third grade knowledge. They will learn how to read and write numbers up through the millions, while also learning how to express numbers in various forms, such as word form, standard form, base ten form, and expanded form. Students will learn about how our number system is designed in powers of ten and be able to determine the place and value of each digit. We will also explore multiplication as comparison, factors and multiples, and prime and composite numbers.

Science & Social Studies

In social studies we will begin by looking into our great state of North Carolina! We'll pinpoint exactly where in the world we live, as well as explore what makes our state unique. Students will learn about the symbols of our state and how they came to be.

In science we will explore animal adaptions, learning about what they are and how animals use them to survive in their environment. We will also dig into rocks and minerals, discovering their properties, differences, and similarities. Our trip to Reed Gold Mine will reinforce what we have learned by experiencing it in real time!
