Disciplinary Literacy for Secondary Leaders
Strengthen Tier 1. Build Literacy Across Disciplines. Lead the Work.
Michigan's K–12 Literacy and Dyslexia Law (Public Act 146) brings new urgency to a question secondary leaders have been wrestling with for years: What does effective Tier 1 literacy instruction look like across a middle or high school?
Strong literacy instruction cannot live only in the ELA classroom. Throughout the school day, students are expected to read, write, think, reason, and communicate in increasingly specialized ways across science, mathematics, social studies, career and technical education, and other disciplines. Within a strong MTSS framework, Tier 1 instruction is the foundation for meeting the literacy needs of students. For secondary schools, disciplinary literacy provides a powerful approach for strengthening that foundation across classrooms and content areas.
LEAD THE WORK IN YOUR SCHOOL
Grounded in Michigan's 6–12 Essential Practices for Disciplinary Literacy Instruction in the Secondary Classroom, this self-paced learning experience helps secondary leaders:
• Understand what strong literacy instruction looks like across disciplines.
• Build a shared vision for high-quality Tier 1 instruction.
• Recognize and support the authentic ways students read, write, think, reason, and communicate across disciplines.
• Lead conversations with teachers about strengthening their disciplinary literacy practices.
• Connect disciplinary literacy to a coherent schoolwide approach to literacy and MTSS.
