President's Message
Your Voice Matters: Get Involved with ATA
The Alhambra Teachers Association is only as strong as its members—and thanks to your dedication and engagement over the years, we’ve made real progress in improving working conditions, advocating for students, and supporting our schools. None of it would be possible without the collective effort of educators like you.
If you’re new to ATA, now is the perfect time to get involved. Whether you’re looking to stay informed, connect with colleagues, or grow your leadership skills, there’s a place for you in our work.
There are several ways to get involved:
1. Join a Committee: We have committees that focus on various interests, such as political action, community outreach, grievances, organizing, membership engagement, bargaining, elections, health benefits, special education (SPED), and professional development and conferences (PDC).
2. Volunteer at Events: Participate by lending a hand at our events.
3. Attend Meetings: Join us in meetings to share your ideas and contribute to our discussions.
This summer, we also encourage you to consider the CTA Summer Institute, held July 16–20 at the Bonaventure Hotel. It’s a powerful week of workshops on organizing, bargaining, leadership, and more—perfect for members at any level of experience. You’ll gain valuable skills, meet educators from across the state, and leave feeling inspired and empowered. More information is provided below.
Remember: you are the union. Your involvement shapes our future.
To learn more, attend the Summer Institute, find the right place to plug in, talk to your site rep or contact us directly. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
In unity,
Ralph Hernandez
Stand Up for Our Schools Rally – May 17
It’s not too late to join us! CTA members are coming together for a powerful day of action to protect our students, our schools, and our future. Be part of the movement!
Rally Details
Date: Saturday, May 17, 2025
Time: Rally begins at 11:00 AM
Location: Corner of Crenshaw Blvd. & Jack Northrop Ave., Hawthorne, CA 90250
Why it matters:
Our students and communities rely on us to protect $16 billion in federal funding for public schools, ensure safety from immigration raids, and defend vital Department of Education programs.
What You’ll Find at the Rally
This should be an exciting, family-friendly event featuring a kids’ area with balloons, coloring, and other fun activities, face-painting, live music, live art, swag, shirt and poster-making sections, food trucks and vendors, complimentary water, and more.
Getting There
Metro Green Line: Exit at Crenshaw Station (0.4-mile walk to rally site) Metro C Link Schedule and Info
Metro Blue Line: Connects to Green Line
Parking
The Crenshaw Metro Station has 500 parking spaces. The cost to park is $3.00 for the day. The earlier you get there, the likelier that there will be enough parking in this lot. However, if the lot is full there is a Lowe’s/Target parking lot across the street where you can also park. There is no parking along Crenshaw Blvd. It is about a two-block walk from either parking area to the rally area. (map below)

Clarifying the Purpose of BAT Text Chains
Our Building Action Team (BAT) text chains are essential for keeping members connected, informed, and ready to take action during our contract campaign. Recently, some members have expressed concerns about messages in BAT text chains that are unrelated to union organizing and not coming from site leaders or ATA leadership. To ensure these text threads remain a trusted and effective communication tool, we ask everyone to focus on sharing union-related updates, actions, and site-specific issues related to our collective work. Let’s respect the purpose of these chains so they stay clear, constructive, and supportive for all members. Remember, the purpose of these chains is to facilitate our union organizing efforts.
Contemplating a Change in District?
If you're considering resigning from the District, keeping a few things in mind is important. Alhambra USD Board Policy 4112.1 states that unit members must notify the District by June 30th if they do not plan on returning. This becomes a legal obligation that all certificated members have with AUSD.
If you are considering leaving your position to go to another district, please seek guidance from ATA before doing so. Leaving your job for another district without seeking that AUSD provide you with a proper release from your contract could lead to serious repercussions such as legal action taken against you by the District and a one-year (and in some circumstances 2-years) suspension or revocation of your credential (Ed Code § 44420).
Take One Less Thing Off Your Mind — Set Up Your Teladoc Account Today
When you or a loved one wakes up sick in the middle of the night, the last thing you want to worry about is how to get care. That’s why having your Teladoc account ready is so important before the need arises. As an employee covered under Alhambra USD’s Blue Shield Self-Funded PPO plan, you have 24/7 access to quality medical care and mental health support — at no cost to you.
Teladoc gives you access to:
- U.S. board-certified doctors, available anytime, day or night
- Licensed therapists and mental health professionals, with appointments available seven days a week
- Treatment for common conditions like cold & flu, allergies, respiratory infections, and sinus problems
- Support for mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, grief, addiction, and more
And the cost? $0 per visit — for both medical and mental health consultations under your plan.
In many cases, Teladoc can be a more appropriate (and far less expensive) choice than an emergency room visit. Whether you’re home, traveling, or it’s the middle of the night, Teladoc gives you access to the care you need, when you need it.
Setting up your account now means you’ll be ready when the unexpected happens — with one less thing to worry about.
See the flyer below for additional details.
2025 Summer Institute
The premier training of its kind, CTA’s Summer Institute takes place at The Westin Bonaventure, Downtown Los Angeles. Offering sessions in a variety of areas that assist chapter leaders in the day-to-day representation of their members, this five-day event will feature hands-on activities to hone the skills needed to meet the challenges of the coming year.
This year the Summer Institute offers ten full-week trainings with instruction that spans Wednesday to Sunday. Participants register for the training of their choice. Some sessions fill up quickly, so it is important to register as early as possible. You may be waitlisted if your first choice is not available at registration. You will be given the opportunity to register for other available trainings while you are waitlisted for your first choice.
