Math

Math has changed so much over the last 10 years in terms of strategies and how we are teaching our students. Below are a few suggestions on how to help your child succeed more in math.

Tip #1:

If your child is struggling with a concept have them talk the problem through with you like a story and approach it together. Math word problems are just like stories, each has characters, actions, or multiple actions, and a solution. Suggest that your child reads the problem aloud more than once, help them pull out those important details, and encourage them to draw pictures to help them solve.

Tip #2:

Help review math vocabulary to ensure that your child is able to define the skills that they are learning. Encourage your child to explain to you what they are doing in class, so that if they are struggling you can also help explain it to them at home.

Tip#3:

Promote math fact fluency for all operations. In grades 1 and 2, students should work on their addition and subtraction facts 0-20 and be able to know them fluently by the end of second grade. In grades 3-5, students should master multiplication and division facts up to 10 times 10. Play math games to encourage your child to learn their facts instead of just memorizing them.
