Hello, SKS!

If you have spent even five minutes around a school, playground, or busy household, you have certainly heard the phrase: "That’s not fair!"

From counting out equal turns in the gaga pit to measuring who got the better seat or who got called on first in class, children (and let’s be honest, adults too!) are hardwired to look at the world through the lens of strict, equal accounting. We want things to be balanced, measured, and earned.

In the Gospel reading for September 20th (Matthew 20:1–16a), reminds us that while human society runs on strictly earning what we deserve, God’s kingdom operates on boundless grace and generous love. This is a great reminder for us about how we can be generous in our school community.

  • Moving from "Strictly Fair" to "What Someone Needs": In a classroom, fairness doesn't always mean every student receives the exact same instruction, time, or resource; it means every child gets what they need to thrive.

  • Guarding Against the Comparison Trap: It’s natural for kids to measure themselves against their peers. We can help them shift the focus by showing them how to cheer each other on.

  • A Fresh Start at Any Hour: It’s never too late to reset or forgive. We are called to help give each other a clean slate at any moment.

My son went to St. Joe’s Prep HS, where I first learned this prayer from St. Ignatius. Maybe if you are a Prep grad (Go Hawks) you know it already. It goes like this:

Lord, teach me to be generous;

Teach me to serve as You deserve;

To give and not to count the cost;

To fight and not to heed the wounds;

To toil and not to seek for rest;

To labor and not to ask for reward,

Save that of knowing that I do your will.

Amen.

As we head into this week, let's look for small ways to help our children -- and ourselves -- move beyond counting points and lean into generosity instead.

Mrs. Mulvanerty
