Important Update on Volunteer Screening
Aloha, Waikīkī School 'Ohana,
As we continue our commitment to creating the safest possible environment for our students, we want to inform you about a new state law that affects all schools in Hawaii.
The Harm to Students Registry is a statewide database established by Hawaii Act 156. The purpose of this registry is to prevent individuals who have been found to have harmed a student at one school from being able to volunteer or work at another. It serves as a vital tool to ensure that our students are protected and that only suitable individuals are given access to our school community.
What this means for our school and volunteers:
In order to comply with this new state law, all individuals who wish to volunteer at Waikīkī School will now be required to go through a new screening process. This will impact all volunteer roles, including chaperoning field trips, helping in the classroom, or assisting with school events.
To complete this process, we will need to verify your full legal name and date of birth to check against the State’s Harm to Students Registry. We are providing two secure options for you to do this:
Email: You can scan or take a clear picture of a valid government-issued ID (such as a driver's license or other state or country identification) that shows your name and date of birth. Please email the image to Vice Principal Whitney Mahoney at whitney@waikikischool.org. For the subject line, please use "Volunteer Clearance." Please also include your Child's First and Last Name and his or her Classroom Number.
In-Person: You are also welcome to come to the school front office and present your identification. Our staff will securely make a copy of it in our office.
Please be assured that any copy of your identification will be used for this purpose only and will be handled with the utmost care and confidentiality. At the end of the school year, we will securely shred any copies of your identification.
Your cooperation with this new safety measure is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at 808-305-6900.
Mahalo for your partnership in keeping our school community safe.
Sincerely,
Ryan Kusuda
Principal
