Week 5!
September: Empathy
Dear Families,
We are excited to share some wonderful developments from our classrooms that reflect our ongoing commitment to creating a supportive, respectful, and empowering learning environment for every student.
Over the past few weeks, our students have been engaging with the Capturing Kids' Hearts model, a nationally recognized framework that helps build meaningful relationships, foster trust, and promote responsible behavior through social-emotional learning.
One of the key components we’ve been focusing on is empathy — understanding and respecting the feelings and perspectives of others. Through class discussions, team-building activities, and daily reflections, students are learning how to:
-
Listen actively and respectfully to one another
-
Use positive communication skills
-
Support classmates through challenges
-
Take responsibility for their actions and words
-
Celebrate each other’s successes and differences
You may have even noticed some of these positive changes at home — students showing more patience, using encouraging language, or being more open to solving conflicts peacefully.
We believe that when students feel safe, seen, and heard, they are more engaged and ready to learn. The Capturing Kids’ Hearts approach helps us build that foundation by creating classroom cultures based on kindness, empathy, and mutual respect.
We encourage you to continue these conversations at home. Ask your child how they’ve been practicing empathy at school, or how they’ve contributed to their class's social contract — another key part of this program that students help create to guide their shared expectations and values.
Thank you for your continued support in helping our students grow not only academically, but emotionally and socially as well. We are proud of the progress they are making and look forward to seeing these skills continue to develop throughout the year.
Warm regards,
Ms. Fonville & Dr. Evans
Estimadas familias:
Atentamente,
Sra. Fonville y Dra. Evans

We are now a Capturing Kids Hearts School. The primary focus of Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH) is to develop healthy relationships between all members of the school community. CKH is a framework that helps good teachers become better by equipping them with tools with which they can build meaningful relationships with their students, provide a safe environment in which students want to learn, and develop a dialogue for team-building. Teachers utilizing the CKH framework are dedicated to building classrooms where trust, respect, and caring relationships flourish. We are committed to implementing these processes at HRE.
