Dear Northfield School District Families:

This is the final time I will write to you as superintendent. Over the past 17 years, this community has become more than a place to live and work — it has become our family’s home. That is because of this community and all of you.

I’ve loved leading in this district because we share high expectations for ourselves, our students, and each other. These high expectations are paired with a high level of support. This combination of high expectations and the corresponding support fueled our effort to prepare every student for lifelong success.

As the district moves forward, we are poised for a renaissance. The blend of experienced staff and new leadership, along with high community expectations and a longstanding tradition of support, creates an environment ripe for acceleration.

Our new superintendent, Dr. Tim Anderson, has my complete confidence and support. I’ve known Tim for several years, but have gotten to know him much better in the past few months. I encourage you to listen to my interview with him on KYMN radio so you can get to know him better, too. I know you will be impressed and excited. Please make him feel as welcome as you’ve made me feel.

Once again, thank you for your commitment to doing good things for kids and each other. Northfield is truly a special place. Thanks for your part in making that true.

Sincerely,

Matt

🏗️ Reimagine NHS: project expected to be on schedule and within budget 🏗️ Reimagine NHS: project expected to be on schedule and within budget

On June 16, the Northfield School District opened bids for the Reimagine Northfield High School project. The results were encouraging. We expect to be on schedule and on budget. Here is the overview:

  • The rebidding saw more competition than in March. The better bids seem to reflect positively on the value engineering process.

  • The mechanical contract, awarded through the best value process, was lower than the March submission but above the original projection.

  • There are still variables to reconcile, which is typical in the post-bid process, especially after value engineering.

  • Based on the rebidding process, Wold, Knutson, and the district expect the Reimagine Northfield High School project to remain on schedule and within the project budget.

  • The value engineering process was thoughtful and will ensure the project remains aligned with the original vision for a reimagined Northfield High School.

  • The board approved the bids at a special meeting on June 24.

You can learn more about the project here.

🏫 Reimagine NHS Construction Update 🏫 Reimagine NHS Construction Update

The Northfield High School Reimagine project has begun in earnest, and regular construction updates will be provided in district and building newsletters and on the district’s website.

Construction activity that took place the week of June 22-26, 2026:

  • Top soil stripped and hauled off to other high school areas to keep it onsite.

  • Parking lot pavements stripped and hauled offsite.

  • Irrigation lines relocated to a temporary position east of the ski shed.

  • Tree clearing 95% completed.

  • Excavations for underground storm structures and a new south parking lot began.

  • Xcel transformer relocated.

  • Verizon tower taken down stored offsite for time being.

Anticipated activity for the week of June 29-July 3, 2026:

  • Excavations for underground storm structures and new south parking lot continues.

  • Complete project site camera setup.

  • Mobilize geothermal well drill rig.

During construction, the preferred route for parking and building access will be via Raider Drive and Door 10. We encourage all visitors to use this entrance throughout the summer.

Please note that while the high school remains open and accessible, access through the construction site is not acceptable. The construction area is outlined in red in the image below, and is fenced off. Please help us to keep all involved safe by staying out of the fenced areas.

More information will be provided regarding building access for next fall as we move forward and will be posted on the district’s website.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we reimagine Northfield High School.

⏰ Reminder: Feedback requested about modifying school start times ⏰ Reminder: Feedback requested about modifying school start times

The school board has been discussing changing school start times, beginning with the 2028-2029 school year. The board first discussed later start times for middle and high school students at its December 15 work session and has continued the conversation at subsequent regular meetings and at work sessions held on January 29 and May 14.

Substantial research suggests health, academic, and other benefits for students who attend middle and high schools where the academic day begins after 8:30 a.m.

The board invites you to share your feedback on three concepts under consideration through this survey.

Take the Feedback about modifying Northfield school start times survey
  • Your input helps us improve our school district.

  • The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

  • The survey will be open until the end of the day Tuesday, June 30.

  • At the end of the survey, you will have the opportunity to be entered into a drawing for $10 in Northfield Chamber Bucks. There will be five winners.

  • Note: We have heard from three individuals who experienced difficulty accessing the survey. If you are having trouble, we recommend trying a different device, as device settings can sometimes prevent access. If the issue persists, please reach out to Kelly Spillman-Kramer at kspillmankramer@northfieldschools.org and she will help you access the survey another way.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your feedback.

Northfield Public Schools is joining school districts, education leaders, and organizations across Minnesota in supporting Minnesota Kids Rise, a statewide, nonpartisan initiative focused on strengthening awareness, trust, and connection around Minnesota public schools through coordinated communications, storytelling, community engagement, and public awareness efforts.

Minnesota Kids Rise was created to help elevate the important role public schools continue to play in preparing students for success, strengthening communities, supporting families, developing Minnesota’s future workforce, and helping communities across the state grow and thrive.

Throughout the summer and into the fall, the initiative will continue building statewide awareness and engagement through digital communications, community storytelling, public outreach, and promotional efforts leading up to a major public activation at the Minnesota State Fair on Wednesday, September 2.

The initiative brings together education leaders, school districts, educators, and partner organizations around a shared goal: helping communities better understand, celebrate, and support the positive impact public schools have across Minnesota every day.

Community members are encouraged to learn more, follow the campaign, and explore upcoming engagement opportunities by visiting minnesotakidsrise.org.
