Superintendent's Message
Dear LPOSD Families,
Thank you for being part of another amazing year! There were so many great moments, it’s tough to pick which ones to spotlight. More than anything, we are really proud of how much our students have grown this year. The staff feels blessed to teach in a community that truly supports our mission of Every Student, Every Day!
Summer break is officially in full swing so together let’s celebrate the beginning of outdoor adventures and plenty of joyful laughter around campfires or swimming in our sparkling lakes. Please encourage your child(ren) to join the “Ditch the Screens” competition this summer – your family will all benefit from more bonding time.
Much Gratitude for the wonderful year, bwm

Sagle Fish Hatchery: A Time-Honored Tradition
Sagle Elementary’s Kokanee Hatchery continues to inspire and educate young minds about the Earth’s ecosystems. “Our students enjoy learning about Idaho salmon, how to care for the young fish and keep the tank healthy, and of course, the field trip to release them,” explained Tom Sawyer, a Sagle teacher. Each year in January, when fifth graders start studying ecosystems, biodiversity and local watersheds, Idaho Fish and Game delivers 150 or so kokanee eggs to Sagle from the Cabinet Gorge Fish Hatchery. They hatch from mid to late January in the school's 60 gallon tank, and are released four months later into a tributary of Garfield Bay when about 90% of them reach the fingerling stage. Students learn how the fish will "remember" the scent of the water in the creek where they are released (or naturally hatch) and then return to the same tributary to spawn as adults about four years later, a process known as olfactory imprinting.
