Third Grade Weekly Snapshot!
Dear Third Grade Families,
We hope you had a restful extended weekend! Even with a shortened week, our 3rd graders jumped right into an exciting start to our 2nd Nine Weeks. In ELAR, we dove into the creative world of folktales, while in Social Studies, we learned about influential community shapers. Our young scientists began exploring forces like pushes and pulls, and in Math, we put our thinking caps on to interpret and analyze data! Have a great weekend, and we canβt wait for a full week of growth and learning ahead!
Warmly,
The Third Grade Team
What are we working on in third grade?
Below are our weekly "I Can" statements, which highlight the main learning targets we are working on this week. Please keep in mind that some learning objectives will spiral throughout the year, so you may see certain standards appear more than once as we continue to practice and deepen our understanding!
Math:
- I can summarize a data set with multiple categories using a frequency table, dot plot, pictograph, or bar graph with scaled intervals.
- I can solve addition and subtraction word problems about elapsed time in minutes using tools and visual models.
I can identify poetic structures like lines, stanzas, rhyme schemes, and sound devices.
I can analyze how a poet uses sensory language to create imagery.
I can paraphrase and retell the main idea of a poem in my own words.
Writing:
I can write my own poetry using poetic structures like lines, stanzas, and sensory details.
I can write a poem from a specific point of view (1st or 3rd person).
I can apply poetic characteristics and grammar skills to edit and craft my own poems.
Phonics:
- I can read, decode, and spell two-syllable VCCV words by splitting them between two consonants (like mag/net and muf/fin).
Social Studies:
- I can design a zoo map using a grid, scale, and map features, use directions to navigate it, and determine the dimensions for an enclosure with a given perimeter.
- I can demonstrate and describe forces acting on an object in contact or at distance, including magnetism, gravity, and pushes and pulls.
Math: Take Home Support Unit 2
We are kicking off our new unit on estimation, rounding, and multi-digit addition and subtraction! Attached to this weekβs newsletter, you will find our STEMscopes Parent Take-Home Letter. This overview outlines the key strategies, place-value concepts, and vocabulary termsβsuch as compatible numbers and roundingβthat your student will be exploring in class.
The letter also includes a fun "Tic-Tac-Toe" board filled with hands-on, everyday math activities you can try at home, like estimating lunch menu costs or playing number line games. While the letter covers multi-digit problem-solving, practicing basic addition and subtraction fact fluency (0β20) at home is also a fantastic way to build speed and confidence as we work with larger numbers! Please take a moment to review the attached PDF for full details.
