The Weekly Update #4
March 11th, 2025

SMA Remnders
- Classes begin at 8:10. Students arriving after 8:10 must be accompanied by an adult and checked in at the office as a tardy. Parents have 3 days upon the date of return to get excuses turned in. Only doctor's notes are excused absences. Students are still responsible for making up any missed work. Maximum unexcused absences including early checkouts and tardies is 13 for the year. In this case, students will be required to attend summer school.
- Cell phones (and electronics) are not allowed on campus by students ordered by LA state law. The bus is an extension of the school so the same rules apply.
- Participating in each month's PBIS free dress will require no referrals. Please be on your best behavior so that you can enjoy this day!
- Hoods on jackets, sweatshirts & shirts are not allowed. Hooded coats are allowed on announced inclement weather days. Beginning March 20th hooded jackets/coats will no longer be allowed. Pullover acceptable colors are purple, white, black and gray.
- Leggings can only be worn under skirts, dresses, or shorts.
- Shorts/skirts should be knee length.
- On free dress days when jeans with rips are worn, skin must not show.
- Seniors leaving early must sign out by the office lobby and exit the main school entrance only.
- Middle school/high school students should take care of restroom needs during transitions and lunch break to preserve educational time in class.
- Only clear water bottles allowed containing water. Liquids other than water make a mess when spilled in class/on buses. Stanley cups are not allowed.
- Please ensure that you have your notifications set on the PCPSB app to get notifications especially on inclement weather days.
- Students at every grade level should read nightly for Read N Quiz points!

SMA Speech Rally @ LSUE
Seniors Riley Patin and Leah Chustz participated in LSUE’s District Speech Rally! Riley participated in the Extemporaneous Speech category, in which she was given a topic and 30 minutes to research before presenting. Leah participated in the Interpretive Speech category, where she selected an excerpt from a work of literature and dramatically performed it for the judges. Both students showcased impressive public speaking skills and dedication in their respective categories. Riley’s ability to quickly organize her thoughts and deliver a coherent, engaging speech earned her recognition, while Leah’s emotional depth and dramatic interpretation of her chosen piece captivated the audience. Their performances reflected their hard work and passion for speech and debate, and they represented STEM with pride at the rally! Great job, ladies!

PE Activity
These kids were able to play in small group on the end of our field. They were independent and practiced all skills daily. They helped others learning how to strike the ball. They are unique because they have self control and maturity. I am so proud of them!!!
Farmer John Visits SMA
Farmer John visited fourth grade today to see what can be done to save our plants since the hard freezes and snow. Since Ms. Chonnon does not seem to have green thumb AT ALL, Farmer John taught kiddos how to decide what plants to salvage. He will be visiting again soon to bring new plants that will be ready to harvest at the end of the year.
Real World Connections to Improve Understanding of Evaporative Coolers
Students explored our campus to locate the greenhouses equipped with evaporative coolers, allowing them to make real-world connections as they prepare to design their own Cajun Air Conditioner. A Cajun Air Conditioner typically refers to a DIY cooling system that often uses ice, water, and airflow to provide cooling, rather than traditional refrigeration or evaporative cooling methods. It is more of a homemade or improvised cooling device, often used in regions with high heat and humidity.
Industrial greenhouses commonly use evaporative coolers to regulate temperature and humidity. Evaporative cooling is an efficient and cost-effective method for cooling large greenhouse spaces, particularly in hot and dry climates. These systems typically work by drawing warm air through water-saturated pads (often made of cellulose or aspen fiber), where the air is cooled as the water evaporates.

The Great Migration in English 3
English III students watched Isabel Wilkerson’s TED Talk, “The Great Migration and the Power of a Single Decision” and engaged in Jigsaw groups to determine different push and pull factors that influenced and motivated migrators to leave during The Great Migration.
Isabel Wilkerson is the first black woman in the history of American journalism to win a Pulitzer Prize, which was for her novel The Warmth of Other Suns. Students are building background knowledge of The Great Migration before they dive deeper into the 525-page nonfiction historical biography!
