Hooker Oak PBIS Highlight — 8-Week Series
Week 1: What Is PBIS?
Building Positive Behavior Together
You may have heard us talk about PBIS at Hooker Oak. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It is a schoolwide approach that helps us create a safe, positive, and predictable learning environment for every student.
PBIS isn't simply a discipline program. We believe that, just like academic skills, behavioral expectations need to be explicitly taught, practiced, and reinforced. Rather than waiting for students to make a mistake, we proactively teach them what successful behavior looks like.
At Hooker Oak, we keep our schoolwide expectations simple:
- We are SAFE.
- We are RESPECTFUL.
- We are RESPONSIBLE.
Try it at home: When you notice your child making a positive choice, name it! Instead of simply saying, "Good job," try:
"You were being responsible when you put your shoes away without being asked."
When we use the same language at school and at home, we help children understand that these are skills they can use everywhere.
