June 2023

As always, I am overwhelmed and touched by the generosity of our parishioners. We asked for peanut butter, and you delivered....almost 1,300 pounds of it! Thank you for always supporting our efforts to feed the hungry in our community. Keep reading below to find out just how our delivery food bank works. It takes many hands - and your financial support - to keep up with the demand. St Charles, patron saint of Catholic action, pray for us!

A PREPARES grant allows us to offer diapers and wipes to our food bank guests each month. In May, we gave out 600 diapers and 7 packs of wipes to 6 families.

Delivery Food Bank

What does it mean to be a delivery food bank?

Guests who call our food bank may need food delivered because they are elderly, have physical limitations, or lack transportation. They also may need a delivery because they can't afford gas to drive to another food bank.

We deliver food on Monday-Thursday from 1- 3 pm or 5-7 pm. Drivers usually commit to one shift a week or every other week. They typically deliver to 2-5 guests in a shift. Drivers arrive at the food bank and pick up pre-packed boxes of food (prepared by other volunteers) and add perishable items such as chicken, eggs, butter, and produce. They might also add special requests such as diapers or cleaning supplies. They deliver the food to people who live within our parish boundaries: south to 128th Street E, west to Canyon Road, east to the Puyallup River, and north to 8th St E in Edgewood. We do make an effort to group deliveries by geography whenever possible so a driver doesn’t have to drive from South Hill to Edgewood in the same shift.

Since drivers interact with vulnerable adults, they are required to complete a background check and safe environment class. There is heavy lifting involved, and drivers must be able to carry food boxes from their car to the home or apartment (which may be on the 2nd or 3rd floor).

Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions | Franciscan Media

Today we celebrate the 22 martyrs of Uganda, Saints Charles Lwanga and Companions. Their stories are set in the court of a chief who did not share their faith. Even though they were pages in his court, their faith meant more to them than his approval and support.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Do you like to knit or crochet? Or would you like to learn how? Our Prayer Shawl group meets each Friday at 10 am in the parish office.

They provide knitted scarves, blankets, and shawls to those who would benefit from being "wrapped in prayer." Parishioners are welcome to pick up an item for a friend or loved one by stopping by the office during office hours.
