Hello, Students and Families!

Mental Health Moment

Our focus on health and wellness comes full circle this week with a reminder of the basics: staying active and giving yourself space to reset can help you feel your best! Moving your body and calming your mind work hand in hand, and each one makes the other easier. This week, try taking one small step toward making both a priority.

  1. In Relaxation Exercises: Breathing Basics, KidsHealth.org offers short, guided recordings, like belly breathing and finger-count breathing, that you can use before a test, before a game, or anytime stress starts to build.

  2. STOP Sports Injuries, from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, shares sport-by-sport tips for avoiding overuse injuries so you can stay in the game all season.

  3. Positivity.org shows just how easy it is to bring mindfulness into your day and where to find everything you need to get started in Best Mindfulness Activities for Teens: Complete Guide.

AP Exam Invoices — LAST WEEK TO PAY!

MHS billed fall + yearlong Advanced Placement exams last week (we will bill spring classes in February); the fall and yearlong payment deadline is Friday, 10/30. With questions about exam content or benefits of exam participation, contact your child's course instructor or Mrs. Abernathy. With questions about billing, contact Mrs. Coon.

Class of 2028

For the next several weeks, Mrs. Longdon will begin meeting individually with all juniors next week for their Junior Conferences. During these meetings, she will discuss each student’s post-secondary plans, review graduation requirements and remaining coursework, and identify important next steps for junior year. Following each conference, Mrs. Longdon will email parents and guardians with relevant information and paperwork, so families can continue these important conversations at home and review any necessary documents together. Please feel free to reach out with any questions!

Career & Community Connections –October Edition Career & Community Connections –October Edition

We have a busy schedule waiting for us after Fall Break, so take some time to recharge! We’ll kick off with a Mini Part Time Job Fair on October 15, host a Non-Profit Fair on October 20, and wrap up the month with multiple Employers of the Day visits. Read on to learn about the organizations students will be interacting with!

Mini Part-Time Job Fair

The next Mini Part Time Job Fair is scheduled for October 15. Our students have already had the opportunity to connect with many employers who are currently hiring teens, and there is even more to come! If your student is looking for a part-time job, encourage them to visit Schoolinks→ Engage → Opportunities and search for local job postings. All of our recent hiring employers have positions posted there. If you or an employer you are connected with has student job opportunities and would like to be a part of a future mini fair, please reach out to Rosanna.giles@maryville-schools.org.

Maryville High School Nonprofit Fair – October 20

We are hosting the MHS Nonprofit Fair after the Pre-ACT, ACT, and ASVAB testing on October 20. After testing, students will have the chance to meet with a wide variety of nonprofit organizations, explore volunteer opportunities, and learn about the missions driving each group’s work. The Nonprofit Fair is a great way for students to connect with their community, discover ways to give back, and explore potential career and service paths. Participating organizations include:

A Secret Safe Place for Newborns

City of Gatlinburg Events

DayBreak Dementia Respite

CHECK OUT PROCEDURES CHECK OUT PROCEDURES

Check-outs should be held to a minimum and are limited to the following:

  1. Emergency - Decision to be made by the principal or assistant principals.

  2. Prior arrangement - If a written request is received by officials in the student services office prior to the beginning of the school day, the student will be dismissed at the requested time. The checkout note must include the student’s full name, date, time of dismissal, phone number where parent/guardian can be reached for verification, and signature of the parent/guardian.

  3. The parent/guardian comes to the main entrance office to sign the student out.

Students who become sick during the school day must report to the assistant principal’s office/school nurse before they call home. The assistant principal’s office will assist the student and permit the student to call home. The student will remain in the assistant principal’s office or with the school nurse until he/she receives permission to go home or until he/she is picked up by a parent/guardian.

Students are allowed to check out during third block only for medical or legal purposes, and proper documentation must be provided. Students are not allowed to check out to retrieve items needed for school. Leaving school without permission will result in disciplinary action.

Students checking out of school on an altered schedule day will receive an unexcused absence unless the school is provided the appropriate legal or medical documentation.
