Message from the Office
Dear Families,
Thank you to all families for helping to make the opening of the new school such a success for all children. The staff and students have worked to develop school and classroom routines. Moving into a new school can come with so many perks and of course some nerves. The staff, students, kitchen crew, and custodial crew have done a great job helping with the transition. Looking forward to a great year at the MCSCS!
Fall is upon us and mother nature has provided us wonderful sunshine and warm days. Please note that the children do have a morning recess. Due to the number of children on the playground and safety we rotate the 7:40-8:00 morning recess. K-2nd goes outside on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 3rd-5th goes outside on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All children are welcome to eat breakfast upon arriving at school.
Enjoy the good Maine weather, but we know that winter is right around the corner. Please let the school know if your child is in need of a winter jacket. We had some jackets donated last spring.
All the best,
Myla Kreider, Principal
Deidre Mitchell, Assistant Principal
Christy Johnson, Dean of Students
The Lobby
✨New Percent for Art Installation in Skowhegan ✨
When the Margaret Chase Smith Community School opened its doors, families were welcomed by something extraordinary in the main lobby: Flight Over the River Valley by artist Antje Roitzsch.
This Percent for Art commission fills the space with colorful aluminum waves and fish that shift with the air currents, casting rainbows when sunlight pours in. Inspired by the school’s River Hawks mascot, the piece imagines young hawks soaring above a vibrant river teeming with life. The artwork greets students and staff each day with movement, light, and joy.

October Core Value
The Hight Family Early Learning Center
The Hight Family Early Learning Center has welcomed its first group of infants and toddlers and preschoolers!
Operated by KVCAP, the center provides child care and preschool for children 6 weeks to age 5 and is the first early learning center included in a new school build funded in part by the Maine Department of Education. The Hight Family Early Learning Center and the Margaret Chase Smith Community School will provide continuous care and education for children from birth through fifth grade.
