The Guardian Gazette
December 16, 2025
Dear Ida B. Wells Families,
This time of year is so fun for our students as they share in the anticipation of winter break and the holiday season. It can also be a time of year when folks struggle or experience hardship. In my work as principal, I experience so much joy by being a part of a diverse community of students who bring lived experiences literally from all parts of the world. I see your students celebrating and sometimes I see them struggling, Please know that I ALWAYS assume that our young people are doing the very best they can in every moment and it’s my call to action to show up for them grounded, resilient, and kind so they feel reassured and supported by me whatever circumstance we are handling.
I am grateful for you, our school community of families, who raised $12,000 to purchase baskets for families in need. In this photo just below, you can see our IBW Counseling Team and Social Worker in front of all the baskets they put together for our families who benefit most from receiving them. Thank you IBW families for giving and receiving, and thank you to our IBW staff who made this possible.
Our students have been working hard going into winter break. Our winter athletics programs have begun with wrestling, basketball, and swimming. We had amazing band performance last week and I am looking forward to the choir performance tomorrow. We also have a school wide winter assembly on Thursday. It’s always busy around here, and now we are winding down to close school for the winter holiday, Friday, Dec. 19th.
On behalf of Ida B. Wells High School, we truly love being a part of our students’ lives. Enjoy winter break with your families, and I wish all of us a Happy New Year! We want our students coming back recharged and ready to go as it is a bit of a haul to spring break.
Please feel free to reach out to me anytime. You can also follow me on my #principalconing instagram page.

You can drop your donations off in your grade level bin, which are located by the North and South entrances to the school. The grade with the most donations will get points for class comp. As a school, we want to be able to donate 400 items to Neighborhood House Food Pantry in Multnomah Village, where all the food will be donated. Items we are looking for are non-perishable pantry items that are unexpired, packaged, and unopened. Specifically, canned foods, whole grain pasta/rice, nuts/nut butters, and breakfast items/cereals. Remember guardians, donate to the Guardians of a Hunger Free Holiday Food drive, and share the joy of having a full plate.

News from our Athletic Trainer
Hello from your friendly neighborhood athletic trainer!
Going in to Winter season, here are a few things you should know:
1. Concussion protocol has changed. There is a new law that requires medical documentation of a
concussion to receive school accommodations. If your athlete sustains a concussion during
athletics or extracurricular activities (eg: car accident, snowboarding, etc) they will need to go in
to see their medical provider and get a written diagnosis of a concussion.
2. Student health centers are FREE for students. And they usually have pretty short waiting times.
If your athlete needs to be seen after a concussion or if they need to renew their physical, the
Student Health Centers are available free of cost. Cleveland High School’s clinic is the nearest
location to us.
3. Wash your hands! As we head into winter illness season, please remind your student athlete to
wash their hands and avoid going to practice if they are sick.
Thank you, and Happy Holidays!

TEACHERS AND STAFF
Congratulations to Kate Nichols — 2025 PhysTEC Teacher of the Year!
Ida B. Wells High School science teacher Kate Nichols has been honored with the Local 2025 PhysTEC Teacher of the Year Award. PhysTEC (the Physics Teacher Education Coalition) recognizes exemplary physics educators, and this award highlights Ms. Nichols’ outstanding impact on students, colleagues, and the broader school community.
In a letter to Principal Coning, the PhysTEC CEO and Project Director praised Ms. Nichols for her significant contributions to physics education at a time when the nation is in critical need of qualified physics teachers. Her dedication and leadership continue to influence not only Ida B. Wells students, but also the district and state.
Ms. Nichols grew up in Littleton, Colorado, and studied Astronomy at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. She later worked as an environmental engineer in California before discovering her true calling in the classroom. Each year brings new stories, challenges, and learning, and Ms. Nichols says she is living her dream job. Even if given the chance to become an astronaut or retire, she wouldn’t leave teaching behind: “Teaching is the thing I’m best at, so why would I stop?”
We are proud to celebrate Ms. Nichols and grateful for the passion and excellence she brings to Ida B. Wells High School every day.

Rotary Youth Exchange Program Seeks Families to Host Students
I was a summer only exchange student from Wilson during the summer of 1962. I stayed with a host family in Zurich, Switzerland. My host father was a mechanical engineer and spoke some English, but my host mother and 15 year old host brother spoke only German. I had two years of German class so it was a wonderful immersion language and cultural experience. Although I was on exchange all summer I only stayed with the family for two months. Airfare was expensive at the time so we traveled by train and ship — the trip took two weeks each way. It was a life changing experience for me. Now as a member of the Rotary Club of Portland, I am paying it forward by chairing the Rotary Youth Exchange program. We offer both summer only and school year exchange programs. We have a student from Finland at Wells this year and we are hoping to place another foreign student at Wells next year. We are currently looking for families who might be interested in hosting a student for all or part of the 2026 -27 school year. We will also be hosting an information night for both students and families in March or April next Spring.
Best Holiday Greetings,
David Noall, Chair
