WHAT'S UP IN SCULPTURE CLASS?
The sculpture class kicked off the year with a group challenge: create a kinetic sculpture. Inspired by Vollis Simpson’s Wind Machine, students brainstormed, sketched, and built their designs, then tested them in front of a fan. Here are two of their successful creations.
First Blood Drive of the Year! 🩸
We’re excited to kick off the new school year with our first blood drive at Watervliet High School! Donating blood is a simple way to make a huge difference—each donation can help save up to three lives.
📘 After-School Homework Help – Starting Next Week! ✏️
We’re excited to announce that after-school homework help will be available for our students beginning next week! Students can stay for one hour after school 3:15-4:15 PM to get extra support or simply have a quiet place to focus on assignments.
-
Tuesdays: Work with Mrs. Simmons
Wednesdays: Work with Mr. Domino
Thursdays: Work with Mrs. Brant
No sign-up is required—students can just stop by the teacher’s classroom after school to participate. This is a great way to catch up on work, get extra help, or stay on top of assignments.
👉 Please note: Students will need to arrange their own transportation home after the session.
We hope many of our Panthers will take advantage of this opportunity for extra support! 🐾
Contratos sociales en las clases de español
In Spanish Classes, we took our original social contracts and made them our own. Each class put together a group and came up with a Spanish themed idea for a poster. All groups, in each class, made their poster, but the winning group from each class was able to make their poster on a bigger scale (gracias a Sra. Hunt). A few students stated they really liked this idea, they felt by doing the artwork they were able to feel more ownership of the words that were picked for the class.
HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT CAPTURING KIDS' HEARTS AT HOME?
Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH) is a relationship-centered approach to teaching and leading. Its purpose is to help educators build strong, trusting connections with students, creating safe and supportive classrooms where learning can thrive. CKH equips staff with tools to:
-
Establish positive classroom culture through social contracts and shared expectations.
-
Improve communication, empathy, and conflict resolution skills.
-
Reinforce respect, responsibility, and accountability among students.
-
Foster environments where students feel valued, heard, and motivated to succeed.
At its core, CKH is about building relationships first, so that academic and personal growth can follow.
CKH FACULTY/STAFF BUILDING WIDE AGREEMENTS
Good Things – Starting class by letting students share something positive that’s happening in their lives. This builds community and sets a positive tone.
-
Greeting at the Door – Welcoming students personally as they walk in with a smile, handshake, high-five, or fist bump to show they are seen and valued.
-
Student Jobs – Giving students classroom responsibilities (like tech helper, greeter, or materials manager) so they feel ownership and leadership in the class.
-
The Four Questions – Using the CKH questions to calmly redirect students when there is misbehavior or disrespect, helping them reflect and get back on track.
-
Launch – Ending class with a short, positive activity, quote, or message that sends students out encouraged and motivated.
-
Social Contract – The class-created agreement on how to treat each other. Teachers and students refer back to it often so it becomes a living part of the classroom, not just a poster.
-
Checking – Encouraging students to respectfully remind their peers to follow the Social Contract and class expectations.
-
Alignment with Initiatives – Showing how CKH practices connect with other things happening in the school (PBIS, SEL, MTSS), so everything works together to support students.
Why Our Teachers Greet Students at the Door
At WHS, you’ll notice that our teachers make it a point to greet students at the door every day. This practice is part of our Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH) initiative, which emphasizes building strong, positive relationships as the foundation for learning.
A simple greeting — a smile, a handshake, a high five, or even just saying a student’s name — helps create a welcoming environment, strengthens connections, and sets the tone for a great day of learning. These small daily interactions show students they are seen, valued, and cared for the moment they walk into the classroom.
It’s one more way we’re building Panther Pride and making sure every student knows: You belong here. 🐾
🌟 Starting the Day with “Good Things” 🌟
At WHS, our teachers begin each day with a simple but powerful practice from Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH): sharing Good Things.
Before jumping into lessons, students and teachers take a few minutes to share something positive — it could be a personal win, a fun moment, or just something they’re grateful for. 💬✨
This practice builds community, fosters connections, and sets a positive tone for learning. It reminds every Panther that their voice matters, and that we start each day focusing on the good. 🐾❤️
