We wanted to also share that we are committed this school year to providing some outside time for students during lunch. Students that meet lunchroom expectations have the opportunity to spend some time, after eating, outside with friends. We would like to continue this, even as the weather gets colder. As long as it is not raining and/or muddy outside we hope to allow students to get out. We want to make sure students have appropriate attire (coats/hats/gloves) as the weather starts to change. Thank you for your help and support!
Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or if we can support you in any way. Looking forward to a great fall!
Go Tornadoes!
Is it bullying? What is it?
In working closely with middle school students we spend a lot of time supporting them in navigating peer relationships. In developing positive peer relationships we want to ensure that students are surrounding themselves with positive peer role models and are exhibiting P.R.O.U.D behaviors (Positive, Respectful, Own It, Understanding, Dependable). As educators we have a duty to teach and model these for our students daily. One area that we wish to support students in learning about is identifying if a peer is being rude, mean or is exhibiting bullying behavior. We think that it is important to talk to your students about the differences and how to handle these situations when they encounter them. Please see the links below with some definitions and examples. This is similar to the language and resources that we utilize at TMS to work with students in learning and growing.
Cooper's Corner!
What a month this has been! We recently celebrated Start With Hello Week, focusing on social inclusion and making sure everyone feels welcome and connected. Each day brought a different activity encouraging students to say hello, meet someone new, include others, and look for ways to make our school a kinder place.
We finished the week with Dolly Day on September 25! Students took on the 9-to-5 Challenge by completing 9 acts of kindness, encouraging 2 people, and reading for 5 minutes during ELA or on their own time.
I’ve learned that sometimes the smallest things—a hello, a smile, an invitation to join in, or a kind word—can make someone’s whole day better.
Since I spend a lot of time with middle schoolers, I thought I’d share a few tips for staying connected with your own middle schooler:
🐾 Ask Beyond “How Was Your Day?”: I’ve noticed that “Fine” is a very popular answer around here. Try asking about a specific class, a friend, lunch, something funny that happened, or what they’re looking forward to tomorrow.
🐾 Know Their People: Friends become a BIG part of life during middle school. Know who your child enjoys spending time with, what they like to do together, and who makes them feel good about themselves.
🐾 Check In on School: Ask what they’re learning, what they enjoy, and what might be challenging. Sometimes they need help with a problem, and sometimes they just need someone to listen.
🐾 Find the Little Moments: Car rides, walks, grabbing a snack, watching a show, or even sitting in the kitchen can turn into some of the best conversations. You don't always need a big “We need to talk” moment.
🐾 Keep the Door Open: Middle schoolers are figuring out a LOT. Let them know they can come to you when things are going well AND when things aren't. And remember—sometimes they may need you to listen before you jump in with a solution.
Most importantly, stay connected even when they act like they don’t need you. Trust me, they still do. They just may not always show it. ❤️
And if all else fails…bring snacks. I have yet to meet a middle schooler who doesn't appreciate snacks.
