May 2021 BSN graduates achieve 100 percent pass rate

Congratulations to the May 2021 Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) graduating class. They have unofficially achieved a 100 percent NCLEX pass rate! The Kentucky Board of Nursing votes annually to approve the pass rates, with this vote expected to take place in 2022.

“The NCLEX is a comprehensive adaptive exam that demonstrates competency to practice as a registered nurse,” said Dr. Dina Byers, dean. “A lot of potential applicants choose nursing programs based on the NCLEX pass rates. NCLEX pass rates are one method of determining the quality of the program and how well students are prepared for nursing practice. The achievement of the 100 percent NCLEX pass rate demonstrates the preparation of the students. This achievement comes at a time of academic, clinical and possible personal challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. I am extremely proud of the graduates and commend the faculty for continuing to achieve excellent outcomes such as this.”

Murray State and nursing program recognized nationally

Murray State University has again been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top schools in the country. This marks the 31st consecutive year Murray State has achieved top-tier rankings. Murray State was also listed regionally as a best college for veterans, while our programs in business, computer science, engineering and nursing were each ranked on the U.S. News & World Report list for 2022.

“We are very pleased to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report for the 31st consecutive year, which reflects our long-standing commitment to providing a high-quality, life-defining college experience for our students through our excellent faculty and staff,” said Murray State President Dr. Bob Jackson.

The University was highlighted earlier this month as a best value for students seeking a college degree by Washington Monthly in its “Best Bang for the Buck” rankings. Also, within the past year, Murray State has been recognized nationally for both quality and value by Forbes, Money Magazine, Niche and the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education.

Sydney Kessler

Sydney Kessler

Congratulations to Sydney Kessler on being selected for the Victory Over Paralysis Summer Scholar Program at Frazier Rehabilitation Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. Kessler was one of only three applicants chosen. Applicants from across the country went through an intense application process and only a select few were chosen for this paid internship. Kessler is a senior exercise science and pre-med major and hopes to go into physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Throughout her internship Kessler worked under a faculty mentor in the pediatric neurorecovery research department, conducted research assessments on children with spinal cord injuries and analyzed research data. Additionally, Kessler had her own research project titled, “Methods to train the trunk for upright postural control and balance in children with spinal cord injury: a scoping review.” She presented her findings to the entire Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center.

“Overall, this internship greatly exceeded my expectations,” said Kessler. “Being able to work as an intern in the same facility that I was a patient in a couple years back was surreal. I absolutely loved meeting and working with all of the children in our studies, and I gained invaluable hands-on experience. I know that the research being conducted has actual implications for people with spinal cord injury, and it was amazing to see the improvements in the eight weeks I was there.”

More information about the program can be found here.

Purchase AHEC partners with nursing to offer free health screenings

The Purchase Area Health Education Center (AHEC) office in partnership with the Murray State University nursing department offered free health screenings this summer to the Fulton community and the Paducah Head Start program. The health screenings included preschool to sixth grade physicals, sports physicals and general physicals.

Murray State nurse practitioner students supervised by Dr. Katy Garth and Dr. Janice Thurmond completed the one-on-one portion of the health screenings. Purchase AHEC’s Rural Scholars and Health Professions students were able to shadow the nurse practitioner students as well as conduct the height, weight, vision and hearing portion of the exams. During the four clinics a total of 120 patients were seen.

“Not only was it a great service to our local communities, it was also an exceptional learning experience for our students,” said Anne Hess, Purchase AHEC health career coordinator.

Nursing students make beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace

On Saturday, September 18, several nursing students and faculty participated in the third anniversary bed build with the Sleep in Heavenly Peace Kenlake chapter. Other participants included volunteers from Delta Zeta sorority and Hope Harbor Church. The Kenlake chapter’s goal is to have a build every month and to build 20 beds. The beds are then delivered to the homes to children in need and set up. Children are also given a mattress, twin sheets, a pillow and comforter.

The Sleep in Heavenly Peace Kenlake chapter serves Calloway, Marshall and Graves counties. Beds are built and set up free of charge. Applications for beds can be found on the Sleep in Heavenly Peace website. Donations are accepted in the forms of money, bedding, mattresses or pillows. Their motto is, “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town®.” If you’d like to know more about the local Kenlake chapter, or make a donation, you can go here.
