Applying for Federal Financial Aid (A FAFSA Update)
All students and their families need to sign up for the FSA ID. This step is necessary for any student who is planning on applying for financial aid. You will need a social security number and a phone number/email address to sign up. The document below provides additional information about the FSA ID. We encourage students and families to review these 7 Tips for the New FAFSA before beginning the process.
FAFSA Festival
This event, hosted by MEFA and FAFSA Day, will provide assistance to students and families completing the FAFSA. Particpants can log in anytime between 6PM and 8PM and be paired with an expert who can answer FAFSA questions and help complete the online application. Before you join the event, we encourage you to start filling out the FAFSA at fafsa.gov. Please register in advance here.

This event is hosted on ZOOM.
Reminders for Seniors
Seniors and senior families! As you continue to make plans for life after high school, please remember to:
✔️ Check in with your school counselor. Remember, you are responsible for submitting any application materials by the deadline. Your counselor will send your school materials (transcript, recommendation letters, etc.), but you should let them know when you've applied.
✔️ Keep SCOIR up to date. As you apply to schools and hear back, make sure you are updating SCOIR so that everyone has the most up to date information.
✔️ Complete any financial aid applications on time. Remember, schools and programs may have additional deadlines and applications to be aware of (in addition to the FAFSA).
✔️ Check your credits! Students must have 134 credits to graduate this year. You earn credits by passing your classes and being present in class. If you have 5 or more unexcused absences in a class, you will lose credit for that quarter. See Ms. Eaton if you have questions about credit loss.
✔️ Complete any final community service hours (students need 36 hours to graduate).
✔️ Pay attention to local scholarship opportunities and submit appications by the deadline.
✔️ Stay on top of your academics. Remember, there are several courses that all seniors must take and pass in order to graduate. Students who are at risk of failing these classes could be in danger of not graduating. Communicate early and often with your teachers and school counselor.
✔️ Expect your transcript, with 2nd quarter grades, to be sent to any school or program that you've applied to. You do not have to speciically request that this be sent as long as you have updated SCOIR.
Junior Guidance Classes
The Guidance team will be visiting with all juniors during the first two weeks of January. During this time, students will discuss the future planning process, explore SCOIR, and begin to develop a timeline and to-do list. Following these group meetings, all juniors are expected to schedule an individual Junior Meeting with their school counselor.
Junior Future Planning Night
Join the WHS Guidance team and local college admissions representatives for a discussion of the college application process. Representatives from different schools will offer insight about the types of schools they represent (public university, private college, private university, community college) and provide tips about the application process at their institutions.

SAT School Day for Juniors
Watertown High School is hoping to host an SAT School Day for juniors in late March. Any junior who would like to take the SATs at WHS (a familiar testing environment) will need to register for the test through the WHS Guidance department, NOT the CollegeBoard website. Sign-up details will be shared separately with all juniors and families soon. This would be the only opportunity juniors would have to take the SATs at WHS this year. Please contact your school counselor with questions.
MCAS Reminders
Students and families are reminded that all 9th and 10th graders will participate in MCAS testing this year.
All 10th graders will take the ELA MCAS in March (March 26 and 27) and the Math MCAS in May (May 21 and 22). All 9th graders will take the Science MCAS in June (June 4 and 5). Students must use their Chromebooks for these tests, so we encourage all students to report any issues with their Chromebooks early (missing keys, missing updates, poor connection to the wifi, etc.). More details about each administration will be shared as the date gets closer.
Scholarships and Special Opportunities
The Guidance Department receives information about scholarships and special opportunities throughout the year. Information about previous and current scholarships and programs can be found on our Special Opportunities and Scholarships Hub. Please see a member of the Guidance department for additional details. Additionally, all seniors will receive the annual Watertown Scholarship Booklet in mid-March.
