Ms. Newton's Notes
Happy Monday!
We are so thankful for so many of you who came out to support our Fall Bookfair. It was a huge success! Special thanks to our media specialist, Corinne Smith, our bookkeeper, Jessica Wentworth and the parent volunteers for organizing and overseeing the daily operations. We hope that you all grabbed some great books that can be used this week for our Read-A-Thon.
Additionally, we'd like to say thank you to Mr. Stewart, Mr. Brooks, and all the students for leading a great kick-off to our Cast Gatherings this year. We had our Falcon Mascot there and many parents joined us as well. We are looking forward to a great Spirit Week this week in celebration of Decatur's homecoming. Please see the flyer below for details about each day.

The parade starts at 5:30 pm and winds its way down the streets of Decatur for approximately 30 minutes.
DHS would also like to invite all CSD staff and students to come and cheer the Bulldogs onto victory against Lithia Springs. Kick-off is at 7:30 pm but we encourage everyone to get there early to get your seat.

Read & Raise-a-Thon: 10/19 – 10/24
Read & Raise-a-Thon is Underway
The competition has begun! Who will have the most minutes read? Which teacher will get to wear the coveted super reader cape?
Encourage your child to read as much as they can, now through Wednesday evening – and, don’t forget to send in their reading logs daily! Ask friends, family and neighbors to support one of our biggest fundraisers of the year.
Check @favepto on facebook for daily updates! For more info, click here.
This week, F.Ave is celebrating “National School Bus Safety Week”! We are partnering with Georgia Commute Schools, a program of Georgia Commute Options, to encourage students to ride the school bus to help reduce traffic around schools and improve our air!
Did you know that riding a bus to school is one of the safest ways for children to get to and from school? It’s 13 times safer than riding in the family car, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Having your child take the bus a couple of days a week, or just for the morning or afternoon ride, can make a difference in air quality. Riding the bus not only helps create a healthier environment for our students, but you’ll help reduce traffic congestion and increase safety in school zones. Plus, the ride to school is more fun with a buddy on the school bus!
The Bike Dudes will be handing out incentives to all Bus riders one (surprise) morning this week. Support School Bus Safety Week by having your child ride the bus to/from school!
Interested in Volunteering?
Volunteers are always needed and appreciated. Please complete this form or email ptovolunteer@favepto.org to let us know you're interested in helping out.

News from SEPTA
October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month
10 Things You Might Not Know about Down Syndrome:
1 in 691 live births in the US is a child with Down syndrome.
Another name for Down syndrome is trisomy 21, or T-21, because people with Down syndrome carry an extra 21st chromosome.
80% of all children with Down syndrome are born to mothers under 35.
Because of the increase in live births of people with Down syndrome and the recent dramatic increase in their lifespan, the population of people with Down syndrome is expected to increase significantly over the next twenty years.
Siblings of people with Down syndrome exhibit increased tolerance, compassion, and awareness compared to their typical peers.
People with Down syndrome who have gone to school and socialized with their neurotypical friends are generally more successful and independent as adults.
Just like most other people, most people with Down syndrome are great learners, even if in their case sometimes it takes them a little longer.
A growing number of individuals with Down syndrome are choosing to live independently, as well as marry.
Many people with Down syndrome graduate, work, volunteer, and vote.
People with Down syndrome have become actors, artists, political activists, motivational speakers, entrepreneurs, college students, and much more!
